Full Bear Mattress Review

The Bear Mattress distinguishes itself from its peers because is formulated specifically for active people and athletes, although of course it can provide a restful sleep also to the laziest of us.

This mattress is part of the great new generation of American mattresses that sells directly to the public reducing the cost and final price dramatically, without sacrificing quality and bringing a lot of innovation in the industry.

What Type of Mattress Is It?

bear-mattress-bed1The Bear Mattress is made of high-density memory foam with the addition of other materials, e specially made for athletes and other people who generally subscribe to an active lifestyle.

How Is It Structured?

The mattress features three layers plus a special cover. From the bottom up:

  1. The base is high-quality, high-density memory foam providing deep support;
  2. The next layer is quick response foam layer to give just the right amount of bounce;
  3. On top of it lies a layer of graphite gel- infused memory foam, which improves the thermal exchange by having a cooling effect of 7 times the regular foam;
  4. The top cover is made of a proprietary fabric infused with Celliant technology, which transform the natural body radiation into therapeutic far-infrared energy.

To recap, the uppermost layer is memory foam. Thus, you can expect the signature support and pressure relief that memory technology has. Beneath it, there is a quick-response foam that adds that luxurious touch of bounce and ductility. So you won’t be sinking in completely here and neither does it have the harsh rigidity of some poorly constructed spring mattresses.

What Category of People Is It Ideal For?

The bear mattress labelIt’s really no secret that different mattresses target different consumers. And the story is not so different with the Bear line of luxury mattresses. Basically, this product is going to appeal to you if:

You’re an athlete or a physically active individual

The Bear Mattress is one of the few mattresses (surely at this price point) that makes use of Celliant technology, which aims chiefly at ensuring fast recovery after intensive physical activity. Definitely a great addition to a memory foam mattress.

You need an ultra-comfortable mattress.

There’s no doubt that Bear Mattresses are some of the affordable yet very plushy beds money can buy today. Even the reviews available online speak for themselves.

You are a fan of memory foam

Unlike spring mattresses, memory foam has a uniquely different support and comfort structure, and the Bear Mattress has made very good use of this.

You are looking for good value for your cash but in a budget.

made in USA signThe Bear Mattress, unlike other brands you’re likely to come across today, is 100% USA manufactured and is typically shipped from the factory’s warehouse right to your doorstep. This way, you can avoid the usual and unnecessary middleman costs associated with going through a retailer. So that’s why the mattresses offer the same luxurious qualities as other ‘high end’ mattresses but at a fraction of their price.

Is There Something I Might Not Like?

Even though the Bear is one of the better built sleeping mattresses out there, it still has some ‘downsides’ that are unique to mattresses made using the new revolutionary memory foam technology. So, it’s possible that you won’t like this mattress if:

You have a pretty strong/defined soft or firm preference.

The Bear Mattress (like most other mattresses that rely on memory foam technology for upper-body support) has only a single firmness level. You can’t adjust it and neither can you tweak it. So if you’re looking for a very soft/pliable or adjustable bed, you might want to look elsewhere or consider adding a mattress topper.

You are not the biggest fan of memory foam.

And this applies mostly to spring lovers. Don’t expect to switch from your traditional spring buoyant mattress to a memory foam without noting a significant change. This change can be positive or negative depending on where you’re coming from and, of course, your personal preference.

How Does This New Technology Work? How Significant Is It in Day to Day Usage?

The bear mattress' Celliant technology fabricIn its most basic form, Celliant is a type of synthetic fiber composed of Thermo-active minerals. Apparently (going by their official website) these minerals convert conventional body heat (radiant energy) into far-infrared energy that is sent back to the body.

As far as Celliant technology goes, these far infra-red rays play a significant role in the recovery of one’s body after a hard day outdoors – i.e. compared to other conventional mattresses out there.

But before you’re tempted to think that this means you’ll be uncomfortably warm while using this mattress, think about it this way: Unlike ordinary infrared rays, far-infrared rays do not pass on heat so you shouldn’t have any problems experiencing sweaty nights with the Bear Mattress.

Does It Contain Harmful Chemicals?

CertiPUR-US logoThe Bear Mattress is certified by CertiPUR-US, guaranteeing compliance to the following strict environmental and health standards:

  • Low emission (low VOCS) for indoor air quality
  • Made without prohibited phthalates
  • Made without ozone depleters
  • Made without PBDEs (dangerous flame retardants)
  • Made without Mercury, Lead or other heavy metals
  • Made without formaldehyde

These substances are used by many manufacturers and this certification is a guarantee of quality that goes way beyond the legal requirements.

Does It Smell?

The Bear Mattress doesn’t use any smelly volatile compounds, so the odor is neutral. According to the manufacturer, there might be a very slight smell when you open the delivery package, but it will dissipate immediately.

What’s The Feel and Firmness Scale of The Bear Mattress?

As pointed earlier, this mattress comes with only one default firmness setting – about 6.5 out 10 on the conventional firmness scale ( 10 being the most rigid/firm).

Nonetheless, apart from this, there’s a layer or a quick response foam that lines the exterior of the mattress that makes the Bear a tad more responsive than the usual/standard memory foam bed.

In short, the incorporating of the response foam provides a unique trade-off to the Bear Mattress, such that as much you can sink in comfortably in the mattress, you will still not get stuck or feel trapped in the morning or after spending a couple of hours on it.

To be exact, 90% of past Bear Mattress users felt that it had quite a good balance as far as rigidity and firmness are concerned.

How About Motion Transfer?

Motion transfer with the Bear Mattress is quite minimal – almost none at all. Which makes it an excellent option for couples if one of them if easily disturbed by shuffling or movement from the other one.

Bear Mattress Accessories

Bear Mattress has added to its family of products with two new accessories, the Bear Pillow and Bear Protector.

Bear Pillow

the bear mattress pillowThe Bear Pillow is an all-sleep position pillow designed with ultimate cooling and recovery technology.

The pillow naturally contours to the sleeper’s desired position, and providing support of the head, neck, and spine.

The Dual mesh side panels support continuous air-flow resulting in the perfect cool & dry sleep climate.

Bear Protect

the bear mattress protectorThe Bear Protect mattress protector offers a five-sided, waterproof, breathable cover that helps you sleep cool.

Hi, I was interested in the radiant healing technology, I am not a super active person, but have aches and pains for arthritis and such. Would it help to heal me too? Or only athletes?

Hi Deb,

If you feel some benefit from warming up the painful joints, this could help.

3

I’ve had the mattress for about 9 months. The foam has already worn out and sinks in the middle. Waste of money. shameful product. I’m 155 lbs and 5’-8”.

Hi Josh,

that;s very unusual as we get a lot of great feedback about Bear. You should definitely make a warranty claim!

5

I bought the mattress because my wife (125lb) and I (210lb) workout a lot and like the fact that it’s targeted towards athletes. The celiant technology sounded good to me as well. However, it seems too firm for us, we both wake up as our sleeping position starts hurting at night. Especially our shoulder sides and blades. We unfortunately have to return it as it doesn’t give us a good night rest. It seems that the second layer of foam is to firm for penetrating heavy body parts. What other mattress would you suggest for back/side sleepers which is a bit softer than a Bear?

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Danny,

a mattress topper could make a big diffference.

7

I’m 220 work out a lot and have had lower buck fusion and neck fusion. Will it hold up to my weight over time. Looking for moderate firm. Any suggestions?

8

Moved house and my husband decided to get rid of our foam matteress. I had to agree with his reasoning. Waking up hot through the night and very

firm. Lots of reviews to read and then to decide on a new mattress. Everyone keep telling me to purchase purple. Then I found the bear reviews. Ordered online use the coupon to get discounts which I use to get another product. Then waiting for the maters to arrive. This came in 2 days… the instruction says you may have to wait 24hrs for the matteress to fully be ready as the matteress came compressed and rolled so al the air was removed for shipping.

We slept on the mattress than night. It feels soft and plush… I’m amazed that the matteress supports the body so well and keep you cool but not cold.

It’s an amazing matteress and my husband agree. Best purchase we made…. love it, love it…

Thanks for the feedback!

Recently purchased as the second matress in our current search…

I was surprised at how soft this matress is, definitely not the medium firm I was expecting from reviews (not necessarily this one). We’ll be returning the matress because of this.

Contrary to this review, or matress had a definite strong odor upon opening that took several days to dissipate. We slept on the matress the first night but the odor was such that we probably shouldn’t have. This for airing out uncovered for 6+hours. Odor completely gone at day 3.

11

I had the same trouble

I am 5’9 and 150 pounds and I think the mattress is too soft.

I sleep on my side and I start having hip pain (my hip would sink in the mattress).

Not happy.

What other mattress would be made of more firm material?

12

Hi, I am very active, but a 125 lb female. I like to sleep on both my back and side. I currently have tried both the Duxiana and a laytex bed I purchased from At Home Naturally, an online site, both of which do not have enough give and don’t feel well rested upon sleeping on them. Sometimes my arms actually get numb and I have to change my sleeping position to relieve. I feel like they do not give with me and are not great at relieving pressure point. I like the reviews and am very interested in the recovery technology. Do you think the Bear mattress would provide the support, yet pressure point relief that I am looking for? If not, which mattress would you reccomend?

Thanks!!!

13

Suzette, I just read your question about the bear mattress and I also have the same issues and weigh 127. Did you purchase the mattress or find one that works for you? I’m searching myself and would love to know if you found something that works! Thanks!

14
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Suzette,

the feedback we get is consistently positive, so I’d suggest you give it a try. There is no risk.

15

So does the mattress contain harmful chemicals? I was hoping for more of a yes or no or even better, nameso possible harmful chemicals. We all know folks go around the question to avoid disclosing inportant information.

16
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Joe,

from what we know there aren’t any harmful chemicals in this mattress, as the foam is CertiPUR-US certified. If you want an official confirmation though, I suggest you contact Bear directly.

“Unlike ordinary rays, Infrared rays do not pass on heat” This is just false. Infrared rays are the primary means of heat transfer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared ). To quote Wikipedia, “Most of the thermal radiation emitted by objects near room temperature is infrared.” Infrared radiation is the basis for heat lamps, night vision goggles, about 50% of the heating of the earth by the sun, etc.

The company’s claims sound like pseudo-science to me. Radiant body heat = infrared rays.

18
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Ryan,

thanks for pointing this out. We have revised the text to specify that this technology deals with FAR infrared rays, which are completely differnet. You can read about them here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3699878/

I personally have owned a bear mattress for 6 months and love it! I compete in American Ninja Warrior and train a lot… and have even seen slight improvements in my recover time. I was skeptical about the technology and claims, but I’m happy to report that the claims were legit. Extremely happy with the purchase and definitely worth the cost (which it’s not as expensive as many competitors)

Overall:

– I don’t wake up at night sweaty or hot. The mattress definitely has great breathability

– I like a soft bed, but not one that makes you feel like you’re sleeping in quick sand. It has decent “bounce” for a soft mattress while still maintaining the memory-foam-like feel.

– If you’re a side sleeper, I’d definitely recommend this. I’ve had a hard time finding a good mattress that doesn’t cause too much shoulder or neck tension, and this did the trick! Works great when I sleep on my back or stomach too.

20

I am definitely a side sleeper. I weigh about 220 lbs. Would you recommend this bed for someone that heavy?

21

I’m also a side sleeper just over 200 lbs. The key thing I’m looking for is a bed that supports my injured lower back. Did you end up getting the bed David?
