Quick AS3 Memory Foam Mattress Overview
Before we continue with the full review, we will quickly go through the purpose of the all-foam mattress so that you know if it’s truly the best mattress for you.
These are all our recommendations based on personal experiences of back and stomach sleepers, hot sleepers, and those sleeping on the side or combined.
- With its all-foam construction, the comfort layer of this mattress combined with the transition layer makes it an excellent bed for couples. With its medium-firm feel, it doesn’t transfer motion as much throughout the entire mattress, so you will not feel your partner tossing and turning at night.
- With its Bio Pur foam, the Amerisleep AS3 has a good temperature regulation despite the thick memory foam layer. This way, the bio core foam provides pressure relief like with traditional memory foam, but it caters to the hot sleepers as well by transferring body heat away from the sleeper.
- Side sleepers require the most pressure relief. This sleep position is the trickiest because if you sleep on the wrong mattress. If too firm, you will put a lot of pressure on your shoulders and hips. On the other hand, if you choose the right mattress, this sleeping position will support your core and promote spinal alignment. With its multiple comfort layers, this foam bed offers the right amount of sinkage to stay comfortable throughout the night.
- Additionally, for hot sleepers who need a mattress with a thick layer that doesn’t make them feel overly stuck, the Amerisleep AS3 will help them stay comfortable in bed.
On the other hand, this mattress isn’t recommended for the following sleepers:
- People with back or hip pain that need a firmer mattress and a lot of edge support. These users will not get the proper sleep quality from the AS3 as its base layer provides more sinkage. Stomach sleepers that are used to sleeping on other mattresses higher up the firmness scale will find the Amerisleep AS3 mattress lacking edge support and providing too much body contouring. Such a soft support core will disturb your natural spinal alignment and cause body aches.
Stomach sleepers won’t get what they need from this mattress. These sleepers need a firm mattress that will help keep their hips from sinking too far into the bed, which can throw their spines out of alignment.
Anyone after a very bouncy bed won’t love this mattress. It is an all-foam bed, so you’re not going to get the bounce you’ll experience on a mattress with springs. If that’s what you’re looking for, I’d recommend the AS3 Hybrid or one of our best innerspring mattresses.
Full Amerisleep AS3 Review
In this review, we’re looking at a mattress by a very established online brand: the Amerisleep AS3 (formerly known as Amerisleep Liberty).
This company sets itself apart using plant-based memory foam and has a solid reputation over its decade in business and excellent overall reviews.
Very few complaints can be seen compared to other long-standing brands, which is a good sign and a testament to quality.
Amerisleep compares itself to brands like Tempurpedic and iComfort in terms of quality and specifications but resides in the middle of the price spectrum without the luxury markups seen in big-name brands.
Their website also includes detailed information on the Amerisleep mattresses, showing a high degree of transparency and enabling shoppers to make informed choices.
The Amerisleep AS3 Bed combines high-quality materials and unique fabric that we found to deliver excellent comfort at a very reasonable price point.
What Type of Mattress Is the Amerisleep AS3?
The Amerisleep AS3 is a memory foam mattress comprising 4 lb. plant-based memory foam with a transitional Affinity layer for a plusher support level.
It’s paired with an intelligent fabric cover, which uses fibers made of minerals to absorb and transform excess body heat.
The result is a mattress that contours quickly to any sleep position and stays cool. An attractively designed cover also ensures it looks high-end and fits into any decor.
How Firm Is this Mattress?
The entire Amerisleep mattress line includes products in five comfort levels ranging from plush to firm. Instead of a traditional memory foam, the Amerisleep AS3 mattress uses Bio Pur foam which is a benefit over all-foam beds on many levels.
The Amerisleep AS3 offers thick memory foam layers that support your body weight and remove any pressure points in all sleeping positions.
It features medium firmness, sitting right in the middle of the firmness scale spectrum.
How are Motion Transfer and Sinkage?
Motion transfer in the Amerisleep AS3 is virtually non-existent. The medium-density memory foam absorbs motion easily, which means sleepers won’t be disturbed by their partner’s movements.
The AS3, being a plusher model than many other memory foam beds, contours readily to your body, but the buoyant nature keeps you from sinking all the way in or losing support.
This mattress has good edge support, and the durable foams help keep the mattress’ edge from losing its strength and shape. It performs well compared to other premium mattresses in the plush range.
Taking the thickness of this mattress into account, the AS3 is pretty impressive: the total thickness of this mattress is 12”, and the sinkage is something we might expect to see with other 10” mattresses we’ve reviewed, like the Casper mattress, for example.
This level of quality is something we might see in a premium $4,000 mattress.
Different Body Weight and Sleeping Comfort
Now that you have a pretty good idea of the motion transfer and sinkage of the Amerisleep AS3, we will talk about a few different performance factors. These are all based on in-depth reviews of people of different weights, those with back pain, and couples.
It is essential to test the mattress you are planning on buying in various sleep positions before you decide to buy. Arrange a sleep trial if possible so that you can experience it at home. With that said, here are some first-hand experiences with the Amerisleep AS3 mattress.
Is the Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Suitable For Sleepers Under 130 lbs?
Light back sleepers will get the best support from the Amerisleep AS3 Mattress because, as an all-foam mattress that is medium-firm, it will support their body weight but also conform enough to give them nice contouring all across the body.
Light side sleepers can also get good support from the Amerisleep AS3 mattress. With its compact memory foam, it gives just enough sink at the hips and shoulders. Although, it may be even better to try and go for the AS4 or even the 5 if you sleep on the side and tend to wake up with a lot of hip and shoulder pain. A softer memory foam mattress will provide more pressure relief and a better spinal alignment.
Light Stomach Sleepers may not get the proper support core of all the comfort layers of this mattress. The best mattress for them would be the AS2 or even AS1, depending on how much hip support they prefer from the transition layer.
Is the Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Suitable For Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 220 lbs?
Average Weight Back Sleepers can get solid support from the AS3 memory foam mattress if they only seek regular support. If they suffer from back pain already inflicted by their old mattress when getting a new mattress, they should look for a firmer one instead. Such a mattress will give them better-localized support. If they sleep on a softer mattress with an all-foam construction, then they will not get the proper spinal alignment needed to eliminate back pain.
Average Weight Side Sleepers will be very satisfied with this mattress because of the give it has. It will provide the needed support but still eliminate all pressure points at the hips, shoulders and will help elongate the spine.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers are not recommended to use this mattress because of its soft comfort layers that will cause their hips to sink in relation to the head and shoulders.
Stomach sleepers need the firmest mattress, and the medium-firm feel of the Amerisleep AS3 mattress will not give them optimal posture.
Is the Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Suitable For Heavy Sleepers – over 250 lbs?
Heavy Back Sleepers may experience sinkage of the hips when sleeping on the Amerisleep AS3 because the memory foam will not give enough support to keep a proper alignment.
When getting an all-foam mattress, heavy back sleepers need to go for the AS4 as it’ll give enough pressure relief without the too much give of the Amerisleep AS3. The AS4 has the second most memory foam layers from any Amerisleep mattress, with thicker comfort layers with a soft feel and more solid support. Moreover, this mattress will give them better edge support.
Heavy Side Sleepers will need all the support they can get from a mattress. The top layer, along with the transition layer, must be firm enough for some extra support. The Bio Pur foam will still provide relief at all the pressure points but is firm enough to elongate the spine. Also, the top layer provides minimal motion transfer and an excellent temperature regulation feature with a breathable cover on top.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers should not consider the Amerisleep AS3 mattress because there is not enough edge support, and its Bio Pur foam is too soft for good support. In fact, all Amerisleep mattresses will be too soft for heavier stomach sleepers. We recommend going with a thick bed with lots of firm support.
Amerisleep AS3 Layers
Their goal with this design is to allow you to enjoy the plush memory foam experience without losing support or sinking uncomfortably deep into the bed.
Also, since the Amerisleep AS3 bed is 12” tall, it’s thicker than the 10” mattress size that competitors offer in this category. This extra thickness adds more durability and supports compression for the average-weight sleepers in all sleep positions.
The layers from the Amerisleep website are:
- Breathable cover that is high-stretch and infused with Celliant and made with Greenguard fiber fire barrier.
- Bio-Pur plant-based memory foam layer for soothing pressure relief. High density brings buoyancy, and the non-temperature sensitive nature favors cooling and breathability with its open-celled construction.
- The affinity layer complements the plush memory foam by enhancing responsiveness and support for both back and stomach sleeping.
- The high-density foam base layer serves as the support core of the bed, providing lasting support for proper alignment.
Does the Amerisleep AS3 Bed Sleep Hot?
From the Amerisleep website:
We’ve designed our mattress for maximum breathability so you’ll stay cool and comfortable through the night. Our Bio-Pur™ memory foam has an extreme open cell structure that lets air move while you’re in bed. It’s a fresh way of getting to sleep.
In other words, they claim that the foam layers themselves do a great job of expelling the heat and providing a cooler night’s sleep.
And that claim is correct, according to the hundreds of reviews we analyzed. The Amerisleep AS3 Bed sleeps cool and breathes, unlike any other memory foam mattress we’ve seen so far.
According to the company, their unique material contains a very high percent of plant-based ingredients.
This lends their foam layer a temperature-neutral nature that doesn’t retain heat close to the sleeper and a very open-celled structure.
This allows air to circulate freely on the top layer, which shows after an extended time on the mattress.
Gels in other memory foam mattresses often warm to body temperature, whereas the breathable material of the Amerisleep mattresses continues cooling.
One great advantage of the Amerisleep mattress is that the majority of the other mattresses that are sold as “bed-in-a-box” do not use any specific cooling technology.
How Long Will The Mattress Last?
The company estimates that their mattress has a lifespan of 10 to 12 years, a figure that outpaces the competition by 5 years.
What we’ve seen from Amerisleep is that their mattresses last longer than the competition while providing the same level of luxury performance.
This is what we expect from the AS3 based on the material specs and foam density.
Where is the AS3 Mattress Manufactured?
The Amerisleep AS3 is built in the USA using a high degree of sustainable materials and ecologically sound manufacturing. Their mattresses ship worldwide from Arizona.
The patented foam manufacturing process used by Amerisleep contributes to cleaner air when produced in the factory thanks to their filtration and avoidance of ingredients with harmful volatile organic compounds.
Does It Smell When New?
The AS3 has almost no smell due to the bed’s construction and delivery approach. From the Amerisleep site:
Instead of producing foam in an open environment that emits harmful contaminants into the air, we manufacture our beds using Variable Pressure Foaming (VPF), the most eco-friendly process in the world.
Our VPF process is free of harsh chemicals, creating foam with incredibly low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Because every variable is computer-controlled inside of the VPF chamber, we create foam with stronger cellular walls to enhance its durability and comfort. Any waste from this process is 100% recycled internally.
Amerisleep’s American-made, plant-based foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, which means that the foam has gone through a rigorous independent testing and approval process to guarantee it’s completely free from bad chemicals.
Their mattresses are never processed with formaldehyde or any other irritating or harmful solutions. And this all goes into the premium quality of the materials you won’t find in most memory foam mattresses.
This is another advantage of Amerisleep vs. Tempurpedic and the bed-in-a-box companies. Most of them experience the issue of odor to some degree, while Amerisleep has designed explicitly for completely bypassing it.
Let us take a quick look at the topmost layer in the Amerisleep AS3 mattress, as it’s unique and comes with a high level of attention to detail.
In the AS3 and all Amerisleep beds, the surface cover of the mattress contains unique fibers infused with a mineral-based material called Celliant.
Celliant is designed to take excess body heat, absorb it, and recycle it into infrared energy. Its capabilities have been clinically tested by the manufacturer, shown to aid in things like pain relief for athletes and to boost circulation.
It’s also been tested on mattresses, where a study found it helped people fall asleep faster.
In addition to the Celliant benefits, the highly flexible nature of the cover material allows the memory foam below to contour to your body fully, and it goes right back to its original shape afterward. Some mattress covers use stiffer materials, which can reduce comfort.
The AS3 mattress cover surface has a textured look, feeling cool and sleek to the touch. This unique surface is complemented with a tan wave design around the perimeter for a high-end, modern look.
Beneath the cover, Amerisleep uses a fiber fire barrier to meet flame standards, which is Greenguard certified for healthier protection.
How Big Is the Mattress?
The mattress sizes currently available cover the standard dimensions:
- Twin: 38”x 74”
- Twin XL: 38”x 80”
- Full: 54”x 75”
- Queen: 60”x 80”
- King: 76”x 80”
- California King: 72”x 84”
The height is 12” for all models.
The Amerisleep AS3 comes rolled compactly in a box, compact enough to ship via FedEx. The package dimensions are around X19” x X19” x X42” for reference for a queen size.
The narrower rolled shape allows it to fit through almost any doorway and hallway, and you shouldn’t have a problem with most staircases and elevators.
If you have a particularly tight door or staircase, it’s always wise to check the dimensions ahead of time.
Does It Need A Foundation Or A Bed Frame?
Amerisleep offers a slick design foundation that they recommend using but says that the AS3 can perform perfectly without it as well. They do suggest a few guidelines to ensure proper support and function.
In order to maintain comfort and protect the bed from damage, they suggest laying it on a solid, flat surface like a platform bed, compatible adjustable bed, or high-quality slats no more than 3” apart and at least 0.5” tall.
The larger sizes (Queen and above) must have central support in order not to get deformed and lose their comfort, as with all beds. Also, the warranty (see below) will be impacted if the wrong type of support is used.
The mattress is compatible with adjustable bed frames, also motorized.
100-Day Comfort Guarantee
Amerisleep stands behind their bed with a 100-Day trial. There are no restocking fees, and you won’t even have to pay the initial shipping fee. If you don’t like the mattress or have received a defective mattress, you can return it and receive a full refund. The 100-day trial begins on the day of delivery, not of purchase—no charges whatsoever.
If it is your first time testing a memory foam mattress, and you’re not sure, this can be a great way to try it out. Many other companies will require you to pay for return or initial shipping, so this is a very fair and generous policy.
Aside from this worry-free trial, they have excellent customer support (1-800-500-4233).
Amerisleep offers a fair warranty that exceeds industry standards. If your mattress is defective within the first ten years, it will be replaced or repaired at no cost.
The amount you would pay to replace the bed is calculated with the following guideline: the number of years you have owned the mattress divided by twenty (20), times the original purchase price. After the ten years full replacement period, years 11-20 are pro-rated. You would also pay shipping costs for the new bed during the pro-rated period.
The warranty is void if the mattress is used on an incompatible surface, if it is soiled, or damaged by the user.
Keep this in mind if you decide to recycle your current foundation. Amerisleep also recommends using a water-resistant mattress cover to guard against spills and other avoidable damage.
How Do I Care for the Amerisleep AS3?
This mattress doesn’t require any flipping as it’s one-sided. The high-quality memory foam will regain its initial shape after every sleep, so there is no need to turn it in any way. Amerisleep does recommend occasionally rotating the bed (as in switching head and foot place), especially in the first couple of years, to promote even wear.
In case you need to store the mattress for a long time, you have to lay it flat and never on the side or folded as it would compromise the structure.
Suppose you decide to use a mattress cover or topper. In that case, it should be a breathable one with a minimal amount of padding, as it interferes with the mattress structure, which is already designed to provide maximum comfort.
How Much Does the AS3 Bed Cost?
Amerisleep prides itself on offering high-quality, healthier, luxury memory foam mattresses at a price of less than half of premium competitors like Tempur-pedic and Serta iComfort.
Their business model cuts out the middleman and passes the savings directly to the consumer.

Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Review – Our Verdict

The AS3 offers terrific support, excellent body contouring, high-quality and green materials, and is designed with cooling and comfort in mind. And it’s at a surprisingly low price point.
