Complete Casper Element Mattress Review
The Casper Element mattress is considered the basic option for the popular line of mattresses. This is basically a rebranded and slightly improved version of the Casper Essential.
For those that are willing to pay just a little bit more, they can also purchase an Original Casper Pillow to take their support and comfort up another notch.
This is great for those who want an affordable mattress, either to suit budget needs or to have a nice starter mattress.
Casper as a brand doesn’t need much introduction as it’s considered to be one of the pioneers of the bed-in-a-box industry.
Thanks to its quality products, reliable customer support and clever marketing, the company is always around the top of the sleepers’ favorites list.
What Type of Mattress is the Casper Element?
The Casper Element is an all foam mattress, designed to provide good support and ventilation while keeping the cost way down.
Being a Casper, the quality is still very high, so we can consider this model to be a very good compromise for people asking for a trusted solution without spending too much.
No Zoned Foam Layers
One thing we do miss in this mattress that is found in the other Casper mattresses are the zoned foam layers.
These offer targeted firmness for different areas of the body in order to support and align the spine.
Although, it’s hard to miss it too much with a price like the one on the Element!
How Firm is the Casper Element Mattress?
The firmness for the Element is around a 5.5 on a scale to 10 (1 being super soft and 10 being exceptionally firm).
This is acceptable and able to cater to many types of sleepers.
Compared to the Casper Original, it is slightly ‘softer’ but with less overall support – which is why this mattress is actually recommended for people weighing less than 250 lbs.
Those that weigh more will likely press more into the base layer and think that it’s a little too soft (and thus might have a harder time getting out of it).
How Many Layers Does it Have?
The Element contains two layers:
- The AirScape breathable layer that allows the sleeper to stay cool
- The base memory foam layer that provides the form’s structure and most support.
While both layers are made of foam, the tiny holes perforating the top layer are what allows it to move air away from the sleeper and keeping them cool.
Casper does a decent job of using their layers to provide better quality to their mattresses.
The Element takes advantage of these layers without increasing the price that people typically see on “luxury” mattresses.
On the Original and Wave, more layers are added for extra breathability and support.
Does the Casper Element Mattress Sleep Hot?
Like we’ve mentioned earlier, with Casper’s patented AirScape layer, its mattresses are able to keep their users fairly cool at night.
Unfortunately, with the fewest layers out of the Casper mattresses, the Element tends to keep its users a little bit warmer while sleeping than if they were using any of the other models.
This is a drawback for this mattress to be sure.
How is Motion Transfer and Sinkage?
The Casper Element’s foam layers make it less susceptible to motion transfer.
Those sleeping with significant others will benefit the most from this mattress as they will feel little motion from the mattress when one of them moves or gets up during the night.
We do see some sinkage because of its firmness level.
The longer someone is laying or sitting on the Element mattress, the more they might get the feeling of bottoming out, especially for those a little heavier.
Does it Have any Smell?
Most people do not experience any issue with their mattresses when they unpackage the Casper Element.
However, if a smell is present from the packaging materials, leaving the mattress out for 24 to 48 hours seems to be able to let the mattress finish off-gassing completely.
In fact, doing so allows the mattress to finish stretching out to its normal layout.
Does it Require a Foundation?
Like the other Casper mattresses, the Element is recommended to be used with a foundation of some kind.
Because this mattress only has a couple of layers, it isn’t quite as sturdy as other mattresses on its own.
Casper foundations can be found on their website and help the mattress itself live longer and stay more protected than if there were no foundation.
What Type of Cover does it Have?
The Element’s soft cover is made of a knit weave hybrid.
It’s manufactured for comfort and durability in mind, without any extras.
This cover is removable, but, unfortunately, not machine washable.
Casper Element Mattress Mattress Durability
Casper offers a 10-year warranty on each of its mattresses, and the Element is no exception.
That being said, you shouldn’t expect to have to use the warranty.
This mattress (much like all of their mattresses) is solidly built with durable memory foam.
We don’t have too much data on the actual longevity of this mattress (like most Casper mattresses) and so we are unable to give you a precise lifetime estimate.
However, with proper maintenance of the mattress we expect this to hold up at the very least for 6 years.
How Much Does the Casper Element Mattress Cost?
Offering good value per dollar is one of the Element’s strengths.
With this mattress, you get a significant amount of comfort and support without the price tag you might see with other mattress companies.
This mattress has the lowest price tag of any of the Casper mattresses.
At the time of this review, the following are the lowest prices we can find:
We can see people with lower budgets (teenagers, college students, etc.) purchasing this mattress as a stepping stone to getting one of the high-end Caspers down the road!
Casper Element Mattress Review – Our Verdict
The Casper Element is a good choice for people buying a modern foam mattress for their first time.
With its favorable price tag, this mattress is surely suitable as the first adult-sized bed for kids or even for guest rooms.
The Element is not recommended for heavy sleepers, although a Casper mattress like the Wave might be a better option for them.
Alongside this, stomach sleepers will probably lack the amount of firmness that they need to stay comfortable while they sleep.
And finally, the Casper Element mattress is a good option for combination sleepers that tend to move around or change positions fairly often through the night.
