Full Casper Original Mattress Review
The Casper mattress was created to support and cool your body while you sleep.
Among Casper mattresses, the Original is mid-grade, right between the Casper Element and the Casper Wave Hybrid.
For a relatively simple three-layer design, the Casper mattress seems to cater to multiple types of sleepers. It will support your body weight in all sleeping positions. Both heavier and average-weight sleepers will get excellent support from the base layer.
This mattress pairs with the Original Casper Pillow and Casper foundations to provide greater support and coolness.
What Type of Mattress is the Casper Original Mattress?
This is one of the three popular Casper models.
The Casper Element & Casper Wave are other popular mattresses from this manufacturer.
The Casper mattress is for those who want a nice balance between price and quality.
The mattress comes with two different options: original and Casper original hybrid.
The original comes with its signature three foam layers, while the Casper hybrid mattress adds in springs for even more airflow, support, and lift.
Memory Foam Zoned Support
The Zoned Support in the Casper hybrid mattress is what makes it shine.
To better support your spine at night, the 1.5-inch layer of the Casper mattress includes three zones with different firmness levels to provide softness for your shoulders and firmness for your hips and lower back.
Airscape Top Layer
Another nice feature of the Casper Original mattress is the Airscape top layer.
This is what allows the mattress to breathe – and ultimately, prevents the sleeper from overheating at night.
How Firm Is the Casper Mattress?
The Casper Original Hybrid has different zones of support to align a sleeper’s spine better.
While a softer foam cradles the upper body, firm foam sits underneath the lower back and hips to better support and align the body.
The memory foam mattresses of this type are perfectly balanced between soft and firm. So, this is not the mattress for those who like exceptionally soft or firm mattresses.
The firmness of the Casper mattress is rated at a 6 out of 10.
This medium-firm mattress is comfortable enough for back sleepers yet supportive enough for side sleepers. The unique pressure relief feature enables the Casper mattress to be an excellent pick for combo sleepers in general. , this is a good option for people that cycle through many sleep positions at night.
However, stomach sleepers might desire more support underneath them.
Like the Casper Original, memory foam-only mattresses tend to compress to a greater degree than hybrid mattresses or latex mattresses. So, if you weigh more than 230 pounds, you may notice that the bed sinks and feels even firmer, which isn’t ideal, especially since it’s on the firmer side to begin with.
How Many Layers Does it Have?
Casper memory foam mattresses are well known for their unique style of layers.
The Casper mattress has three layers: A firm base, a memory foam layer of three different firmness zones for relief (called “Zoned memory foam Support”), and a layer of breathable memory foam that allows the air to circulate through the mattress.
These layers make up the high quality and comfort aspects we tend to see in Casper mattresses.
All in all, these layers add up to a height of 12 inches, with the base making up 7 inches. This increases the edge support and provides excellent pressure relief.
The mattress is built with the following layers:
- Airscape Top Layer
- Zoned Support Layer
- Firm Base Layer
The hybrid version features springs between the base and the support layers to increase airflow and support.
Does the Casper Original Memory Foam Mattress Sleep Hot?
All-foam mattresses usually sleep hot, but this cooling mattress with its smart mattress cover is designed with comfort in mind.
Even though you’d think the memory foam would make it retain heat, an Airscape layer and breathability function are built in its memory foam construction. So, you can sleep in any preferred sleeping position and get wake up well rested each morning.
This is a suitable option for those that overheat at night (for couples or combination sleepers in general). The middle layer of memory foam on this all-foam bed is a special perforated foam that transfers heat away from the body, so it is suitable for everyone.
Outstanding Memory Foam Layer for Motion Transfer
Many people forget to think about the amount of motion transfer when shopping for a new mattress, but this is a major factor in the functionality of a mattress, especially for couples. If you get a firmer mattress than what you are used to, you will probably feel your partner’s every move, and it won’t be as comfortable.
However, the multiple layers of memory foam make this the perfect mattress for light sleepers. Motion transfer is relatively limited for the Original – and with the bouncy, airy top layer, sleepers also don’t tend to feel trapped inside its medium-firm feel either.
Combination sleepers and back and stomach sleepers will get a good night’s sleep out of any sleeping position thanks to the zoned support system.
Sinkage is limited to the firmness of the memory foam and balanced out with the latex-like top layer.
Towards the edges, people may feel a bit more sinkage/motion transfer because of the lower amount of support offered from the layers. If you need more solid edge support, try the other Casper mattresses with a higher firmness. However, keep in mind that a firm mattress won’t offer as much pressure relief as softer mattresses would.
Do the Casper Mattresses Have Any Smell?
For shipped mattresses, it’s quite common for there to be a chemical-like smell when it first comes out of its packaging.
Unfortunately, it seems like the Original Casper is no different in certain instances – although by airing out the mattress for a little bit, the smell should go away.
However, all of Casper’s foams are certified by CertiPUR-US, which guarantees the absence of toxic chemicals.
Does it Require a Foundation?
While the Casper Original has a strong base with its zoned support, it still requires a foundation.
You can support this foam mattress with bed frames or box springs. The Casper bed frames are specifically created to pair perfectly with any Casper mattress and help to extend its longevity. This will give it better edge support and maintain its proper shape.
What Type of Cover does it Have?
Casper Originals have a simple, stretchy white polyester blend cover.
The material is high quality and thick, with a comfortable texture. It is perfect for stomach sleepers, thanks to its softness. So, even if you are sleeping without a plush pillow, the zoned memory foam beneath you will provide much-needed comfort. It has a good slip to it, so hot sleepers will sleep cool.
Because the corners and edges are a dark grey, it stands out amongst the cheap all-white mattresses we’re used to seeing. We recommend getting a bed frame that will match its colors.
The drawback with this cover is that it is not machine washable, even though you can remove it.
Casper Mattress Performance Durability
The Original Casper mattress is well known for its warranties and trial period.
The Casper mattress totes a fantastic 10-year warranty with a 100-night risk-free trial. So, if you decide that you don’t like it, you can return it hassle-free.
Because this mattress is relatively new to the market, we can’t give you a precise range for the typical lifespan of a Casper Original.
All we can guess is that it would last at least the average lifespan of a mattress – around six years.
How Much Does the Casper Original Cost?
Compared to the Casper Element and the Casper Wave, the Casper Original is a happy medium in terms of cost.
The Casper Original in its memory foam version offers more bang for your buck than the Element because it’s a better choice for most people.

Casper Mattress Reviews – Our Verdict
From what we’ve noticed, this is a good all-around mattress for those looking for a step up from the basics of the Element (or any basic bed, for that matter).
While the firmness level and sinkage might depend on a person’s body weight, the softness of the cover and airy top layer allows for extreme comfort.
All in all, this bed in a box holds up under a lot of scrutiny.
With a good balance for most people, we can see this being an excellent choice for many.
After purchasing, the Casper mattresses ship immediately, and they offer white glove delivery if you want to dispose of your old and make room for your new mattress.
