Full Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Contour Supreme Mattress Review

Tempur-Pedic Company, the manufacturer of the Tempur-Contour Supreme high-quality mattress line, is the pioneer of memory foam mattresses, and competitors are compared to it all the time.

Critical criteria about a mattress producer such as availability, support, number of years in business, and overall company reputation have always been greater than the competition throughout the years. However, more recently, younger companies started to surpass it.

Tempur-Pedic’s legendary line of firm mattress models has been further enhanced, providing the best feel among all the Tempur-Pedic collections.

Over the years, Tempur-Contour mattresses have enjoyed a strong flow of positive reviews from sleepers who immediately benefit from the perfect balance between body-shape support and firmness.

However, some adverse facts about the materials’ quality have emerged in the past couple of years, which tarnished the company’s image (more below).

What Type of Mattress is Contour Supreme Exactly?

tempur-contour supreeme mattress close-upTempur mattresses are all made of memory foam produced from polyurethane with other proprietary chemical substances to bring density to a higher level.

In technical jargon, this solid foam is named visco-elastic polyurethane foam.

The material is composed of a massive number of sphere-like open cells bound to each other.

How Firm is The Tempur-Pedic Mattress?

When compared to other Tempur-Pedic mattresses, The Contour Supreme is the firmest and might not be the best choice for most side sleepers.

At the same time, however, the manufacturer promotes it with the motto “soft where you want it, firm where you need it,” which is relatively accurate according to most reviews.

Does it Provide Good Motion Isolation?

One of the best features of memory foam is the isolation of movement to a tiny area, right where it happens. This feature can be very serious for couples sharing the same mattress, allowing for complete independence of movement.

In fact, the other side of the mattress won’t budge at all when turning around or when getting on or off the bed, leaving the sleeping partner undisturbed (remember, though that some degree of interaction might still happen when sharing the same linens).

The fact that this mattress is denser than its competitors makes it even better at isolation motion, and most owners report an “excellent” rating for this characteristic. Among its peers and other Tempur models, the Supreme is considered the one with the highest level of motion isolation.

Will it Become Hot While I’m Sleeping?

red thermometer - memory foam mattress dissipation issues.Although memory foam mattresses have the reputation of being heat traps, over the years, the technology has improved substantially, and today only a small minority of owners report complaints about poor heat dissipation, which coincidentally happens during the hottest months when mattresses of any type have a hard time providing refreshment.

This model features a moisture-absorbing cover that helps preserve dryness and overall coolness to minimize the issue.

Nonetheless, it is true that memory foam contouring mattresses tend to retain more heat than the innerspring system mattresses, but the difference today is minor. If you are a very “hot” person, you might want to consider other technologies like innerspring, or other memory foam mattresses with innovative materials, like the Bear Mattress.

How Long Will It Last?

In general, Tempur-Pedic mattresses enjoy a lifespan that is virtually double that of budget foam alternatives. They also have significantly longer durability compared to better-quality foam mattresses across the board.

Against the traditional manufacturers like Simmons, Sealy, and Serta, the advantage is reduced but still noticeable, with an estimation between 7% and 10%. That’s one extra year of life.

Does it Smell When New?

When unpacked, many mattresses, especially the memory foam ones, will release a chemical-like odor for a short period due to the manufacturing and packaging process. This phenomenon, which is much less annoying than it sounds, is called off-gassing.

According to the company, it’s not unhealthy, and in most cases, it isn’t even noticed by the owners. However, a tiny number of people (about 1%) reported some degree of discomfort, and in those cases, it is suggested to leave the mattress in a ventilated space for 2-3 days to let the odor dissipate.

According to user reviews, TempurPedic mattresses overall tend to smell a bit more than the average. The denser ones, like the TempurContour Supreme, emit a slightly stronger odor for a couple of days.

If you consider yourself as a person with extremely high sensitivity towards chemicals, you might want to consider another mattress type (see our updated mattress guide for other ideas).

More recently, though, a lawsuit was brought against Tempur-Pedic for containing formaldehyde and other toxic Volatile Organic Compounds, which are considered dangerous by the EPA.

How are the Layers Structured?tempur-contour premium cover

The “Comfort Layer” at the top is made of 1.2 inches of memory foam, while the “Support Layer” is 2.8 inches of memory foam. The “Base Layer” consists of 7 inches of regular foam.

The cover is made of a “high-loft super-stretch fabric” and sports grey upholstery sides. It is effortless to remove, wash and replace.

The whole mattress undergoes an antimicrobial treatment that prevents parasites, including dust mites.

Will The Tempur Mattress Fit My Room?

The Queen-size mattress is 60″ wide, 80″ long, and 11.5″ thick in total.

As usual, take a minute to make sure the mattress fits the room and all the doors (and staircases) it must go through when it is delivered. Keep in mind that the thickness can make quite a big difference if space is already limited. So take actual measurements, don’t guess!

In case of necessity, the mattress can be folded. Just make sure to fold it with the top part inside. If you leave it folded in cold weather (below 50F), don’t force it open and just let it extend by itself. Otherwise, the foam cells might lose their correct structure.

Does it Need a Bed Foundation?

According to the manufacturer:

Tempur Contour Supreme mattress is designed to work on a firm, solid-surface, non-spring foundation or adjustable bed base that is structurally capable of supporting the weight of purchaser’s Tempur-Pedic mattress and user(s).

Be careful: if an inadequate foundation type is used instead, the mattress warranty will be considered void (see below).

So what can be considered adequate? According to several sources, you can use your existing bed frame and foundation as long as you can ensure that the mattress will be entirely flat for its entire area. This can be achieved by inserting a bunkie board (not the slats type) between the bed and the foundation, as long as the board will retain a solid flat shape and won’t bend.

That’s why this solution is discouraged in the case of old spring-boxes, which might offer irregular support across the surface, which might then impact the mattress profile.

Does it Need a Memory Foam Mattress Pad?

In short, no. It isn’t recommended to add a mattress pad or cover on top of this mattress. It would be an additional layer in between your body and the precious memory foam, which would result in a diminished ability to adjust to your body and provide the whole “Tempur experience.”

If you want to add a mattress protector (not a pad) to prevent stains or damage, anything goes as long as it’s thin and elastic enough. Tempur-Pedic manufactures their kind, which they claim is designed to work perfectly for their mattresses “without impacting the feel or performance.” You can get it for about $90 here.

How to Care for the Tempur-Contour Supreme Mattress?

Each mattress has its quirks in terms of caring, so make sure you are familiar with how to deal with maintenance when the need arises.

Washing the cover

The included cover can be easily removed and washed with a mild detergent using a cold temperature setting for machine washing and a cool setting for tumble-drying. However, as with most fabrics, air drying is the best option if you have the possibility. If using a dryer, make sure not to over-dry the cover.

Do not use chlorine-based products (like bleach, Clorox,…) or any other aggressive stain removers of any kind on the cover.

Cleaning spills

Foam mattresses usually aren’t supposed to get wet as liquids can damage the delicate material. In case liquids are spilled on the mattress, these are the best steps to take.

  • Remove the cover of the Contour Supreme mattress and wash it in cold water with mild detergent (see above for details about caring). Don’t use bleaching on any of the top layers.
  • If the liquid is on the mattress, try to remove most of it by soaking it up with a clean towel. Pick a dry part of the towel, press down on the foam to squeeze the moisture out, and repeat until nothing comes out anymore (check the towel).
  • Once the liquid is entirely removed, leave the mattress uncovered to let it dry. If you want, you can use a fan pointed towards the bed to increase air circulation. Do not use a hair-dryer as the hot air will damage the foam.
  • In any case, never wash the mattress.

Flipping and rotating

This mattress is designed to lay only on one side (the two sides are very different in material), and no flipping is requiredRotating is also unnecessary as the foam will go back to its original shape after each sleeping session for years and years.

Other useful info

  • The use of electric blankets and pads is discouraged as they interfere with the mattress’ firmness. If you must use them, try to limit the active period to 30 minutes on low or medium modes.
  • If you need to store it or transport it over a long trip, make sure the mattress can lay on its back and NOT on its side or folded.

What is Covered by the Warranty?

According to Tempur’s website:

“Your new Tempur-Pedic® mattress and flat foundation are covered by a 10 Year Full Replacement Limited Warranty. For 10 years after you purchase your new mattress or foundation from Tempur-Pedic or an authorized Tempur-Pedic Retailer, when it has a defect covered under the warranty, we will replace or repair it. This includes all parts of the mattress and foundation, and there’s no deductible.”

Sagging: as this is the most prevalent complaint overall for any mattress, it’s important to highlight that Tempur-Pedic has probably the best sagging coverage of any other brand. The usual sagging requirement to make a warranty claim is larger than 1.25 inches, while for this mattress is just .75 inches. That’s impressive.

Softening: This warranty does NOT cover “a normal increase in softness of the TEMPUR® pressure-relieving material which does not affect the pressure-relieving qualities of the mattress,” but fails to define in detail what a normal increase in softness is, leaving it open to interpretation and consequently hard to claim. On the other hand, it is an industry (poor) standard not to be very precise about firmness changes.

Please make sure to read the part above about using an adequate foundation, or else you’ll risk voiding the warranty.

How Much Does it Cost?

The official Tempur website sells the Queen size for $2,199, and most online shops offer the same price. However, Wayfair.com provides the same price with its guarantee and a much better delivery system.

TempurPedic Tempur-Contour Supreme Review – Our Verdict

Although Tempurpedic made history with their introduction of memory foam in the industry, this mattress is not up to pair with many other brands on the market today in terms of technology, safety, restful sleep, and indeed price.

Popular companies like Amerisleep, for example, offer better mattresses for half the price, with more advanced technology regulating the heat transfer and, most importantly, a much more careful selection of manufacturing materials, which aren’t hazardous for our health and the environment.
