In this review, we’re looking at a mattress by a very established online brand: the Amerisleep AS3 (formerly known as Amerisleep Liberty).

This company sets itself apart by using plant-based memory foam, and has a solid reputation over their decade in business and overall very good reviews.

Very few complaints can be seen compared to other long-standing brands, which is a good sign and a testament to quality.

Amerisleep compares themselves to brands like Tempurpedic and iComfort in terms of quality and specifications, but resides in the middle of the price spectrum without the luxury markups seen in big name brands.

Their website also includes detailed information on the Amerisleep mattresses, showing a high-degree of transparency and enabling shoppers to make informed choices.

The Amerisleep AS3 Bed combines high-quality materials and a unique fabric that we found to deliver excellent comfort at a very reasonable price point.

What Type of Mattress Is the Amerisleep AS3?

The Amerisleep AS3 is a memory foam mattress comprising 4 lb. plant-based memory foam with a transitional Affinity layer for a plusher support level.

It’s paired with a smart fabric cover, which uses fibers made of minerals to absorb and transform excess body heat.

The result is a mattress that contours quickly to any sleep position and stays cool. An attractively-designed cover also ensures it looks high-end and fits into any decor.

How Firm Is this Mattress?

The entire Amerisleep mattress line includes products in five comfort levels ranging from plush to firm.

The AS3 features medium firmness, sitting right in the middle of the spectrum.

the As3 on the firmness scaleIt’s good for side sleepers, larger back sleepers, people who change positions often, and those who prefer a little more cushion — a bed that’s not hard but not overly soft either.

How are Motion Transfer and Sinkage?

Motion transfer in the Amerisleep AS3 is virtually non-existent. The medium density foams absorb motion easily, which means sleepers won’t be disturbed by partners movements.

The AS3, being a plusher model than many other memory foam mattresses, contours readily to your body but the buoyant nature keeps you from sinking all the way in or losing support.

This mattress has good edge support, and the durable foams help keep the mattress’ edge from losing its strength and shape. It performs well compared to other premium mattresses in the plush range.

Taking the thickness of this mattress into account, the AS3 is pretty impressive: the total thickness of this mattress is 12”, and the sinkage is something we might expect to see with other 10” mattresses we’ve reviewed, like the Casper mattress for example.

This level of quality is something we might see in a premium $4,000 mattress.

Amerisleep AS3 Layers

Amerisleep AS3 LayersThe Amerisleep AS3 mattress contains three layers beneath the cover, designed with high quality materials throughout.

Their goal with this design is to allow you to enjoy the plush memory foam experience without losing support or sinking uncomfortably deep into the bed.

Also, since the Amerisleep AS3 bed is 12” tall, it’s thicker than the 10” mattress size that competitors offer in this category. This extra thickness adds more durability and support compression.

The layers from the Amerisleep website are:

  1. amerisleep as3 mattress sectionBreathable, high-stretch Celliant-infused cover with Greenguard fiber fire barrier.
  2. Bio-Pur plant-based memory foam layer for soothing pressure relief. High density brings buoyancy, and the non-temperature sensitive nature favors cooling and breathability with its open celled construction.
  3. Affinity layer complements the plush memory foam by enhancing responsiveness and support.
  4. High-density foam base layer serves as the core of the bed, providing lasting support for proper alignment.

Does the Amerisleep AS3 Bed Sleep Hot?

From the Amerisleep website:

We’ve designed our mattress for maximum breathability so you’ll stay cool and comfortable through the night. Our Bio-Pur™ memory foam has an extreme open cell structure that lets air move while you’re in bed. It’s a fresh way of getting to sleep.

In other words, they claim that the foam layers themselves do a great job of expelling the heat and providing a cooler night’s sleep.

And that claim is correct, according to the hundreds of reviews we analyzed. The Amerisleep AS3 Bed sleeps cool and breathes unlike any other memory foam mattress we’ve seen so far.

biopur foam vs memory foamMost higher-priced competitors  we’ve seen ($2,000-$4,000) rely on gel-infused foam layers near the top, whereas Amerisleep uses unique and superior type of foam compared to standard poly foams.

According to the company, their unique material contains a very high percent of plant-based ingredients.

This lends their foams a temperature-neutral nature that doesn’t retain heat close to the sleeper, and a very open-celled structure.

This allows air to circulate freely, which shows after an extended time on the mattress.

Gels often warm to body temperature after a while, whereas the AS3’s breathable material continues cooling.

By the way, a majority of the new, “bed-in-a-box” companies do not use any specific cooling technology.

How Long Will the Mattress Last?

The company estimates that their mattress has a lifespan of 10 to 12 years, a figure that outpaces the competition by 5 years.

What we’ve seen from Amerisleep is that their mattresses last longer than the competition while providing the same level of luxury performance.

This is what we expect from the AS3 based on the material specs and foam density.

Where is the AS3 Mattress Manufactured?

The Amerisleep AS3 is built in the USA using a high degree of sustainable materials and ecologically sound manufacturing.

The patented foam manufacturing process used by Amerisleep actually leaves air cleaner leaving the factory thanks to filtration and avoiding ingredients with harmful volatile organic compounds.

Does It Smell When New?

The AS3 has almost no smell due to the bed’s construction and delivery approach. From the Amerisleep site:

Instead of producing foam in an open environment that emits harmful contaminants into the air, we manufacture our beds using Variable Pressure Foaming (VPF), the most eco-friendly process in the world.

Our VPF process is free of harsh chemicals, creating foam with incredibly low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Because every variable is computer-controlled inside of the VPF chamber, we create foam with stronger cellular walls to enhance its durability and comfort. Any waste from this process is 100% recycled internally.

CertiPUR-US logoAmerisleep’s American-made, plant- based foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, which means that the foam has gone through a rigorous independent testing and approval process, to guarantee it’s completely free from bad chemicals.

Their mattresses are never processed with formaldehyde or any other irritating or harmful solutions. And this all goes into the premium quality of the materials you won’t find in most memory foam mattresses.

This is another advantage of Amerisleep vs Tempurpedic and the bed in a box companies. Most of them experience the issue of odor to some degree, while Amerisleep has specifically designed for completely bypassing it.

Celliant-Infused Cover

Let us take a quick look at the topmost layer in the Amerisleep AS3 mattress, as it’s unique and comes with a high level of attention to detail.

the amerisleep as3 from an angleIn the AS3 and all Amerisleep beds, the surface cover of the mattress contains unique fibers infused with a mineral-based material called Celliant.

Celliant is designed to take excess body heat, absorb it, and recycle into infrared energy. It’s capabilities have been clinically tested by the manufacturer, shown to aid in things like pain relief for athletes and boosting circulation.

It’s also been tested on mattresses, where a study found it helped people fall asleep faster.

In addition to the Celliant benefits, the highly-stretchy nature of the cover material allows the memory foam below to fully contour to your body, and it goes right back to its original shape afterward. Some mattress covers use stiffer materials, which can reduce comfort.

The AS3 mattress cover surface has a textured look, feeling cool and sleek to the touch. This unique surface is complemented with a tan wave design around the perimeter for a high-end, modern look.

Beneath the cover, Amerisleep uses a fiber fire barrier to meet flame standards, which is Greenguard certified for healthier protection.

How Big Is the Mattress? Will it Fit my Home?

The mattress sizes currently available cover the standard dimensions:

  • Twin: 38”x 74”
  • Twin XL: 38”x 80”
  • Full: 54”x 75”
  • Queen: 60”x 80”
  • King: 76”x 80”
  • California King: 72”x 84”

The height is 12” for all models.

The Amerisleep AS3 comes rolled compactly in a box, compact enough to ship via Fedex. For a queen size, the package dimensions are around X19” x X19” x X42”, for reference.

The narrower rolled shape allows it to fit through almost any doorway and hallway, and you shouldn’t have a problem with most staircases and elevators.

If you have a particularly tight door, or staircase, it’s always wise to check the dimensions ahead of time.

Does It Need A Foundation Or A Bed Frame?

Amerisleep offers a slick design foundation that they recommend using, but says that the AS3 can perform perfectly without it as well. They do suggest a few guidelines to ensure proper support and function.

In order to maintain comfort and protect the bed from damage, they suggest laying it on a solid, flat surface like a platform bed, compatible adjustable bed, or high quality slats no more than 3” apart and at least 0.5” tall.

The larger sizes (Queen and above) , must have a central support in order not to get deformed and lose their comfort, as with all beds. Also the warranty (see below) will be impacted if the wrong type of support is used.

The mattress is compatible with adjustable bed frames, also motorized.

100-Day Comfort Guarantee

Amerisleep stands behind their bed with a 100-Day trial. There are no restocking fees and you won’t even have to pay the initial shipping fee. If you return it‚ you will receive a full refund. The 100-day trial begins on the day of delivery, not of purchase. No charges, whatsoever.

If it is your first time testing a memory foam mattress, and you’re not sure, this can be a great way to try it out. Many other companies will require you to pay for return or initial shipping, so this a very fair and generous policy.

Aside from this worry-free trial, they have an excellent customer support (1-800-500-4233).

Amerisleep Warranty

Amerisleep offers a fair warranty that exceeds industry standards. If your mattress is defective within the first 10 years, it will be replaced or repaired at no cost.

After the 10 year full replacement period, years 11-20 are pro-rated. The amount you would pay to replace the bed is calculated with the following guideline: the number of years you have owned the mattress divided by twenty (20), times the original purchase price. You would also pay shipping costs for the new bed during the pro-rated period.

The warranty is void if the mattress is used on an incompatible surface, if it is soiled, or damaged by the user.

Keep this in mind if you decide to recycle your current foundation. Amerisleep also recommends using a water resistant mattress cover to guard against spills and other avoidable damage.

How Do I Care for the Amerisleep AS3?

the mattress on the floorThis mattress doesn’t require any flipping as it’s one-sided. The high-quality memory foam will regain its initial shape after every sleep, so there is no need to turn it in any way. Amerisleep does recommend occasionally rotating the bed (as in switching head and foot place) especially in the first couple of years to promote even wear.

In case you need to store the mattress for a long time, you have to lay it flat and never on the side or folded as it would compromise the structure.

If you decide to use a mattress cover or topper, it should be a breathable one with a minimal amount of padding, as it interferes with the mattress structure which is already designed to provide the maximum comfort.

How Much Does the AS3 Bed Cost?

Amerisleep prides itself on offering high-quality, healthier luxury memory foam mattresses at a price of less than half of premium competitors like Tempur-pedic and Serta iComfort.

Their business model cuts out the middleman and passes the savings directly to the consumer.

Here are the current Amerisleep mattress prices, and as you can see you can get a great discount of 30% by applying our exclusive coupon code TS30:

Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Review – Our Verdict

The mattress itself is very balanced, providing plushness that a lot of bed in a box models lack without excessive hugging.

The AS3 offers terrific support, great body contouring, high-quality and green materials, and is designed with cooling and comfort in mind. And it’s at a surprisingly low price point.

In short, the Amerisleep AS3 plant-based memory foam mattress is the top contender among the higher-priced premium competitors.

To summarize, here are the things we like the most about this bed compared to the competitors:

  • Amerisleep beds are made in the USA with plant-based foams, and it’s wrapped in Greenguard approved fiber fire barrier.
  • It uses high-density foams designed to last.
  • This brand’s foams are made in a very eco-responsible manner without compromising on luxury.

My husband, 5′ 5″ and 150 lbs, loves to sit on the side of the bed before crawling in. Sometimes in the night he will sit there for 30 minutes at a time. We were all set to try a foam mattress but then I started reading that this habit will bread down the sides of the bed. We already have had a problem with this even with a spring mattress that has a wire running around the sides at the top. Do you think this mattress will stand up to this sitting on the edge?

I am interested in the AS3 bed, because I have had neck and lower back operations. I see where it can be used with an adjustable bed base and I am curious if there are specific brands (any on Amazon) that would work with this bed?

How does one handle the mattress during a move? Our last memory foam was destroyed by the moving company.

      Hi Marlene,

a moving company shouldn’t destroy anything… for a memory foam, it’s enough to place it flat on some flatsurface without excessive weight on it. It’s important you don’t leave it sideways for too long or on uneven surfaces.

I purchased this mattress after I came to the conculsion that my current mattress was causing me back pain. So I did my research and decided to go with amerisleep. I was about to order online then I found out you had a location in Austin I could go visit. I ordered this mattress on Sunday the 12th at an amerisleep store. Was told it would take 3 to 4 business days to ship. Called amerisleep on Thursday the 16th and was told the mattress has not shipped and could not tell me when it would ship. I canceled order due to frustration and poor customer service. Then I was told that the mattress would be here by Wednesday the 22end. On Monday I had yet to get a tracking number so I canceled order. Funny I was told that Amerisleep could overnight the mattress on Monday. Why was this not offered last week?? So amerisleep gladly excepted my $1100 for a mattress that I have yet to receive or a refund as of Wednesday the 22end. Also Mattress has to be shipped from Arizona so you have to pay Arozonas taxes which cost me $135 on a $1050 mattress.

We bought the AS3 AmeriSleep And have slept on it a few nights and are already impressed With how cool and comfortable it is. I am literally not waking up with night sweats anymore. However, while it does form to our back’s and side joints (while side sleeping) is comfortable… It is a little on the firm side. Will it soften over time or do we need to go ahead and see if it can be exchanged for the softer version?

I’m afraid they don’t offer the installation service, so you’ll need to contact somebody locally. Alternatively, you could look at other brands offering the free white glove service, like Saatva and Loom & Leaf. Others like Tomorrow Sleep offers it at a fee (around $75 currently).

I wake up each day with hip and shoulder pain, it wasn’t until I went on vacation last week that I realized my problems are bed related and not some health issue. I slept great until my return from vacation. I have no idea what I sleep on, but I realize my pain returned within 2 days.
Now, I’m seeking out a comfortable bed for my husband and I. We both are primarily side sleepers, although I sometimes sleep flat on my back. We have had a pillow top for 12 years. I realize now that’s too long, but my back issues only began about a year ago. I was focused on a latex bed after some research but, many sites seem to contradict each other when it comes to the best type for back pain. Also, I am leery of online purchases, any suggestions?

I tried the Liberty mattress for about 60 days and found it was one of the best mattresses I ever slept on except that it was too warm which would wake me a bit too often. It would be great if Amerisleep got rid of this feature since it is a common (and usually only) complaint of customers.

I am researching getting a new bed, and I’m feeling a bit stumped because my husband and I have such different sleep needs. He’s thin, sleeps on his stomach and back (prefers stomach), and prefers a firm mattress. I am plus-sized (275 lbs), prefer to sleep on my side, and have a nerve pain disorder which means I need exceptional pressure relief (not something we have found in firm mattresses thus far). We are hoping to pay less than $2000 for a king sized mattress. Is there any hope for something that can hold up to my weight and pressure relief needs, but still offer a firm enough sleep surface for my husband? Currently considering Nectar, Amerisleep, Ghostbusters, and Loom and Leaf.

Is there an individual weight limit for the Liberty?

I enjoyed your review. I bought a loom and leaf relaxed firm mattress about 45 days ago and it is too firm for me. I want to get a softer mattress but not soft at the 3 range of the firmness scale. In your opinion, is the liberty softer than the loom and leaf relaxed firm? If so, considerably softer or just a little. Thanks

      Hi Thomas,

the Amerisleep Liberty is a bit softer than the Loom & Leaf, but not by much. I’d suggest you look at Helix Sleep as it’s more customizable.
