Casper Original Mattress Review

Summary

The Casper Original mattress seems to be the best option for versatility in sleepers, making it good for couples with big differences in sleep position habits.

This mattress has a nice balance between price and quality when we compare it with other Casper mattresses.

Those that are looking for a mattress with a lot of bounce or a lot of firmness might not like this mattress as much.

However, this is a suitable all-around mattress that combines firmness, softness, and many important features of a relaxing night's sleep.

There is also a foam version for this model that is a bit more expensive.

Pros:

  • Cool for a foam bed
  • Affordable Price - Get the Queen size for just $995 only with our coupon code TED
  • 100-night trial
  • 10-year warranty

Cons:

  • Foam version more expensive

The Casper Original mattress was created to support and cool your body while you sleep.

Among Casper mattresses, the Original is mid-grade, right between the Casper Element and the Casper Wave.

For a fairly simple three-layer design, the Casper Original Mattress seems to cater to multiple types of sleepers.

This mattress pairs with the Original Casper Pillow and Casper foundations to provide greater support and coolness.

What Type of Mattress is the Casper Original Mattress?

view of the Casper original mattress from the corner

This is one of the three popular Casper models.

The Casper Element & Casper Wave are other popular mattresses from this manufacturer.

The Casper Original is for those who want a nice balance between price and quality.

The mattress comes with two different options: original and hybrid original.

The original comes with its signature three foam layers, while the hybrid original mattress adds in springs for even more airflow, support, and lift.

Zoned Support

The Zoned Support in this mattress is what makes it shine.

To better support your spine at night, this 1.5-inch layer includes three zones with different firmness levels to provide softness for your shoulders and firmness for your hips and lower back.

Airscape Top Layer

Another nice feature of the Casper Original mattress is the Airscape top layer.

This is what allows the mattress to breathe – and ultimately, prevents the sleeper from overheating at night.

How Firm is this Mattress?

The Casper Original has different zones of support to better align a sleeper’s spine.view of the Casper original mattress with somebody laying on top of it

While a softer foam cradles the upper body, firm foam sits underneath the lower back and hips to better support and align the body.

The mattress is almost perfectly balanced between soft and firm – so for those that like especially soft or firm mattresses, this is not the mattress for them.

We would rate the firmness at a 6 out of 10.

Comfortable enough to sleep on your back yet supportive enough to sleep on your side, this is a good option for people that cycle through many sleep positions at night.

However, for those that almost solely sleep on their stomachs, they might desire more support underneath them.

How Many Layers Does it Have?

Casper mattresses are well known for their unique style of layers.

The Casper Original mattress has three layers: A firm base, a layer of three different zones of firmness for relief (called “Zoned Support”), and a layer of breathable foam that allows the air to circulate through the mattress.

These layers are what make up the high quality and comfort aspects we tend to see in Casper mattresses.

All in all, these layers add up to a height of 12 inches, with the base making up 7 inches.

The mattress is built with the following layers:

  1. Airscape Top Layer
  2. Zoned Support Layer
  3. Firm Base Layer

The hybrid version features springs between the base and the support layers, to increase airflow and support.

Does the Casper Original Mattress Sleep Hot?

This mattress is designed with coolness in mind.

Even though you’d think the memory foam would make it retain heat, an Airscape layer and breathability function is built-in.

This is a suitable option for those that overheat at night (or for couples in general).

How is Motion Transfer and Sinkage?

The amount of motion transfer is something many people forget to think about when shopping for a new mattress – but is a major factor in the functionality of a mattress, especially for couples.

Because of the multiple layers of memory foam, motion transfer is relatively limited for the Original – and with the bouncy, airy top layer, sleepers also don’t tend to feel trapped inside the mattress either.

Sinkage is limited to the firmness of the memory foam and balanced out with the latex-like top layer.

Towards the edges, people may feel a bit more sinkage/motion transfer just because of the lower amount of support that is offered from the layers.

Does it Have any Smell?

For shipped mattresses, it’s quite common for there to be a chemical-like smell when it first comes out of its packaging.

Unfortunately, it seems like the Original Casper is no different in certain instances – although by airing out the mattress for a little bit, the smell should go away.

However, all of Casper’s foams are certified by CertiPUR-US, which guarantees the absence of toxic chemicals.

Does it Require a Foundation?

While the Casper Original has a strong base, it does still require a foundation.

Casper foundations are specifically created to pair perfectly with any Casper mattress and help to extend its longevity.

What Type of Cover does it Have?

Casper Originals have a simple, stretchy white polyester blend cover.

view of the Casper original mattress

The material is high quality and thick, with a comfortable texture.

Because the corners and edges are a dark gray, it stands out amongst the cheap all-white mattresses we’re used to seeing.

The drawback with this cover is that even though you can remove it, it is not machine washable.

Casper Original Mattress Durability

Casper is well known for its warranties and trial period.

For the Casper Original, it totes a fantastic 10-year warranty with a 100-night risk-free trial (so if you decide that you don’t like it, you can return it).

Because this mattress is fairly new to the market, we can’t give you a precise range for the typical lifespan of a Casper Original.

All we can guess is that it would last at least the normal lifespan of a mattress – around 6 years.

How Much Does the Casper Original Cost?

Compared to the Casper Element and the Casper Wave, the Casper Original is a happy medium in terms of cost.

The Casper Original in its memory foam version offers more bang for your buck than the Element because it’s a better choice for most people.

As of today, Casper is giving a special discount of $100! To benefit from it, just use code TED at checkout and get these lower prices:

And these are the prices for the Casper Original Hybrid mattress:

Full:$1,195$1,095
Queen:$1,295$1,195
King:$1,495$1,395
Cal King:$1,495$1,395

The Casper Wave and Wave Hybrid are both more expensive models that feature more complex foam layers.

However, if you watch their website, they do offer occasionally offer fairly frequent sales.

Casper Original Review – Our Verdict

From what we’ve noticed, this is a good all-around mattress for those looking at a step up from the basics of the Element (or any basic mattress, for that matter).

The shipping box

While the firmness level and sinkage might depend on the body weight of a person, the softness of the cover and top airy layer allows for extreme comfort.

With the Original Casper Pillow and a Casper Adjustable Foundation, you can expect a mattress that will continue to support and cool your body throughout the night.

All in all, this Casper holds up under a lot of scrutiny.

With a good balance for most people, we can see this being a very good choice for many.
