Cocoon by Sealy is a premium quality bed designed with a proprietary blend of memory foams all crafted to support and compliment each other as well as your body while sleeping.

Sealy is one of the most renowned and trusted companies in the bedding industry, and has skyrocketed in popularity with their newest innovation- the Cocoon mattress.

Officially named as Tempur Sealy International Inc, the company is the most famed mattress provider in the world.

With over 130 years of experience in the mattress industry, the company has now become the largest manufacturer of mattresses in the world.

The company designed and tested about 100 prototypes to craft a mattress that measures up to Sealy’s standards of durability and quality.

Also, the company takes charge of the entire production process from the superior quality materials used to the final mattress so you can trust that the Cocoon mattress is a premium quality bed.

What Type of Mattress is the Cocoon?

The Cocoon is a mattress in a box manufactured by Sealy, one of the true veterans of the mattress industry.

cocoon mattress's detail

Backed by scientific research, the Cocoon mattress is crafted out of the highest quality materials and fabrics that are available.

It is a firm, premium, unique memory foam mattress with innovative and comfortable layers that will improve the quality of your sleep.

Constructed with multiple layers of memory foam and crafted over the course of 2 years, the Cocoon mattress is a direct-to-buyer mattress that promises to deliver unparalleled quality.

Tested for comfort, safety, durability, and even the effects of handling, packaging, and shipping, the Cocoon mattress by Sealy will modify the way you sleep.

How Firm is it?

A plethora of online mattress companies just offer one firmness option, however, you get two firmness options with the Cocoon mattress.

This feature is quite beneficial for sleepers who know they desire something slightly firmer or slightly softer.

The soft version is more of a medium and comes in at a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the firmest.

It offers flexible and soft support and is ideal for those who like sleeping “in” their mattress. In other words, you sink into it and feel like it cradles you a little bit.

The softer version of the Cocoon mattress is usually preferred by side and stomach sleepers as the firm model can feel too firm for such sleepers.

On the other hand, the firm version comes in at a 8 out 10. It offers durable and firm support and is ideal for those who like sleeping “on” their mattress.

Also, as there is less overall sinkage, the firm version has a little more of a floating feel to it.

Back sleepers who are bulkier in weight or who prefer a firmer mattress can enjoy the firm version of the Cocoon mattress.

However, the feel of the mattress is well balanced on soft as well as firm version and both offer a nice level of pressure relief.

How Many Layers Does it Have?

The mattress is available in 2 models: Firm and Soft.

The Firm model offers 2 layers that are thoughtfully designed to provide a comfortable sleeping surface that offers deep compression support, pressure point relief, and also prevents overheating while you are meeting your desired firmness level while sleep during the night. It is made up of the following layer:

  • Comfort Layer: This is a 2″ of memory foam top layer that offers pressure relief as well as comfort for sleepers. However, as compared to the softer version of Cocoon the thinner profile of this layer creates a firmer feel.
  • Support Layer: This is an 8″ of base layer that acts as a foundation. This bottom layer of firmer model acts as the foundational base for the entire mattress. In addition to this, it offers deep compression support to the sleeper as it responds to the body and offers the appropriate level of support that is required to avert strain on the body, thereby preventing pain.

the mattress' layersThe Soft model offers 3 layers which combine together to create a mattress that provides minimal heat retention, superior comfort, and great support. It is made up of the following layers.

  • Comfort Layer: This is a 2″ of memory foam top layer that is specially designed to offer the initial comfort along with pressure relief for the sleeper. It is highly responsive and provides a hugging feel that contours to the body.
  • Support Layer: This is a 2″ of transitional poly foam middle layer which not only acts as the support layer but also acts as the transitional layer from the softer top layer into the more denser bottom layer. It reacts to the sleeper’s weight, providing more support where it is required and less where it is not.
  • Foundation Layer: This is a 6″ of base foam layer that chiefly acts as the foundational base for the entire mattress. In addition to this, it offers a deep compression support for bulkier sleepers. This in turn helps to relieve pain, thereby enhancing the comfort.

How is Motion Transfer and Sinkage?

The mattress does quite well with motion isolation test.

If you are easily disturbed by your sleeping partner moving around in the bed, then you can consider the Cocoon mattress as it isolates motion very well.

The motion transfer is essentially zero and the bounce is fairly minimal.

The lower level of bounce creates minimal movement across the mattress, thus not causing any disturbance when your partner changes positions or gets out of bed.

Lighter sleepers will certainly find the motion transfer of the Cocoon mattress to be beneficial

With regard to sinkage the performance of the mattress will vary according to the pressures, positions, and conditions.

While lying on your back with all the weight spread uniformly across the mattress, you will experience 1″ of sinkage on the firm and 2″ of sinkage on the soft. While lying on your side, you will experience 2″ of sinkage on the firm and 3″ of sinkage on the soft.

While sitting on the edge, you will experience 2.5″ of sinkage on the firm and 3.5″ on the soft, and in a more aggressive sitting position, you will experience 4″ of sinkage on the firm and 5″ of sinkage on the soft.

With all of your weight standing at one position, you will experience 5.5″ of sinkage on the firm and 5.5″ on the soft.

Does the Cocoon Sleep Hot?

the cocoon mattress doesn't sleep hot

The original Cocoon mattress had a basic cover which was already pretty good. Later, the Chill version was released and became the standard.

The Cocoon Chill cover is very breathable and instantly reacts to your body temperature, thereby keeping it cool as you sleep.

It is specially designed with the phase change material to absorb and dissipate heat for a refreshing and cool-to-the-touch surface.

Does it Have any Smell?

Off gassing is often an issue with mattresses that are made up of foam due to the presence of chemicals that are used in their construction.

Such mattresses emit odor and smell that can easily seep out of them.

With both soft and firm Cocoon mattress, you may experience a noticeable odor when you unbox them.  However, this is totally normal and if you place the mattress in a room with open windows, the smell will dissipate within 48 hours.

Does it require a Foundation?

The mattress does not require any specific type of foundation or boxspring, and it can be used with any boxspring, foundation, platform bed or slatted base.

It is designed to work on a solid surface, adjustable base, or firm foundation that is structurally capable of supporting the weight of the buyer of the Cocoon mattress.

What type of Cover does it have?

As mentioned, the Cocoon Chill cover is constructed of a blend of cotton and polyester and contains a phase change material that is specially designed to absorb and store body heat.

This in turn provides either a warm or cool sleeping surface, according to the body’s temperature.

It typically acts as a temperature regulator, thereby creating a surface that meets the requirements of the sleeper’s body.

The phase change material is much more effective than gel and since it is in the cover instead of the foam, and it does not affect the performance of memory foam as in case of gel infusion.

The Cocoon Chill cover is also durable, breathable, stretchy and soft.

Furthermore, it adds a nice cool feel when you first get in bed. However, it stays cool for the first 15 to 30 minutes of sleeping and then reaches an equilibrium with the sleeper’s body.

If you shift to another area of the mattress it will be cooler until the body’s heat causes it to reach the temperature of the phase change material.

What is the Best Way to Care for the Cocoon?

It is quite easy to clean and maintain the Cocoon mattress.

The cover of the mattress cannot be taken off or washed, so it is recommended to spot clean the mattress.

If you want to remove stains, all that you need to do is dampen a cloth with a mixture of delicate-friendly detergent and water, and gently scrub the spot in circular motion until the stain comes off.

It should be dried up naturally and no chemical or harsh detergent should be used.

Also, it is recommended to use a mattress protector in order to keep the mattress safe and clean.

It can also be vacuumed after every 3 to 4 months to prevent any dust from settling in.

Following these instructions will keep your Cocoon mattress clean and tidy, and also increase its lifespan.

Will it Last Long?

The Cocoon by Sealy is manufactured in the US, which ensures high quality materials and craftsmanship have been used in the construction of the mattress.

CertiPUR-US logoIt scores high based on customer satisfaction with great feedback.

The premium stretch-knit fiber cover of the mattress with spun poly fibers make it breathable as well as durable with a soft feel.

In addition to this, the foams used in the mattress are CentriPUR-US certified which implies that the mattress is safe and goes through strict safety inspections, thereby ensuring its long lasting durability.

Size and Shipping

The mattress is available in 6 sizes which include, Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and Cal King.

the cocoon is shipped in a boxThe Cocoon mattress is shipped free of cost and it arrives between 5 to 7 days. However, the company does not deliver outside the US.

The mattress is delivered right to your doorstep in an easily movable box which measures 15″ x 15″ x 44″.

This in turn allows you to maneuver the mattress into the appropriate position.

When it arrives at your door, it is compressed in a plastic sleeve and rolled into a small box that is made to be capable of handling by one person.

100 Night Risk-Free Sleep Trial and Guarantee

The company offers a 100 nights risk free trial, which implies that if you are not happy with your Cocoon mattress for any reason, you have the option to return or exchange it.

However, the company suggests you to sleep on it for at least 30 nights as it takes a while to adjust to a new mattress, especially if your previous mattress was worn.

And of course, you can return it at any time during the first 100 nights. The company will pick it up and donate it to a charity.

Also, if you want to try a different feel of the mattress, the company can help you with the process of exchanging, and even after the one-time mattress exchange, within the 100 nights trial, if you are still not satisfied, the company will refund your money.

Once the return is confirmed, the company will refund your money within 1 to 2 business days.

Warranty

The mattress is covered by a 10 year warranty which implies that for a period of 10 years, starting from the time you purchased the new mattress from Cocoon by Sealy, or from an authorized retailer of Cocoon by Sealy, when it has a manufacturing defect covered under the warranty, subject to the limitations mentioned in the limited warranty the Cocoon by Sealy, the company will either repair or replace it absolutely free of cost.

The warranty is valid in connection with the original purchase of new mattress only and extends from the initial date of purchase of the original product.

The limited warranty covers any physical flaw in the cocoon mattress such as tearing of the cover, despite proper handling and normal usage, or any deterioration causing the new mattress to have a visible indentation greater than 1″ that is not linked with a sag or indentation resulting from use of an unsupportive or improper adjustable bed or foundation base.

the cocoon by sealy in a nice roomAlso, normal wear requires that the new mattress be constantly supported by a matching adjustable bed base or foundation with an appropriate bed frame good enough to support the collective weight of the foundation and mattress.

An appropriate bed frame must provide sturdy support for the foundation as well as the mattress. However, failure to have so may void the warranty.

Likewise, for slatted bed frames, it is important to ensure that the frame offers sufficient structural support for both the foundation and mattress in view of that specific slated style frame.

The use of a right bed frame is essential for the life and protection of your entire sleep surface.

However, the limited warranty does not cover comfort preference, mattress used by someone other than the first and initial purchaser of it, a normal increase or decrease in the softness of the mattress, any physical damage or abuse to the cover material or structure, including but not limited to tears, cuts, stains, burns, or liquid damage resulting from the use of the product, or mattress sold by resellers who are not retailers.

In addition to this, if the buyer uses an inappropriate boxspring, foundation, bed frame, or adjustable bed, such use will void the limited warranty.

Also, the company may require the buyer to provide proof of the quality of the adjustable bed, bed frame, or foundation used in conjunction with the mattress if buyer makes a claim under this warranty.

How much does the Cocoon By Sealy Cost?

The Cocoon is a mattress in the box design which implies it is shipped directly from the manufacturer to the buyer.

This in turn eliminates the hassle of shopping in a mattress store and also mitigates overhead cost, which in turn lowers the overall price of the mattress for the consumer.

The company has gone to great lengths to make the mattress as affordable as possible, and thus it is available at great price point for the quality of construction and materials used.
