In this review we look at the GhostBed Luxe mattress.

A branch-off of popular and long-time bedding manufacturer, Nature’s Sleep, GhostBed first launched in 2015.

Initially, the company took on the mission of simplifying the mattress buying experience by removing the need for modern buyers to have to deal with traditional showroom salespeople.

They started out with just a single product offering – The GhostBed mattress (which we reviewed here).

Since then, their product lineup has grown to include things pillows, foundations, bases and the latest in their mattress lineup – The GhostBed Luxe mattress.

As an enhanced version of their original, the Luxe incorporates a number of innovative design elements to better regulate temperature and keep the mattress cool.

A few of the ways this is done is through the use of specialized fabric woven into the mattress cover, and also a special phase-change material added above one of its foam layers.

Both of these processes are proven to prevent heat retention and make the mattress cooler to the touch.

The GhostBed Luxe is manufactured in the United States and is marketed as being “The Coolest Bed in the World.”

GhostBed Luxe Pricing Information

Not surprisingly, the innovative technology used in the construction of the bed commands a higher price tag than standard foam beds.

But, most reviewers found the price to be well worth the sleep quality and durability of the mattress.

The following is the price list as of today:

  • Twin: $995
  • Twin XL: $1,175
  • Full: $1,350
  • Queen: $1,475
  • King: $1,785
  • Cal King: $1,825

Shipping is within the contiguous United States, but Alaska and Hawaii incur a steep shipping charge (see above).

GhostBed does not ship outside of the US.

What Type of Mattress is the GhostBed Luxe?

The GhostBed Luxe is a memory foam mattress, however, it is different from many of the other foam mattresses in the market.

The GhostBed Luxe mattress from the frontAccording to the manufacturer’s website, the “new 13” GhostBed Luxe is the only mattress with 2 stages of cooling that will keep you and your mattress cool and comfortable.”

The two stages of cooling include Ghost Ice Fabric and a special Cooling Layer that instantly cools the body upon contact.

Each of the mattresses made by the company come with a 101 night risk-free sleep trial and a 20 year warranty.

GhostBed Luxe Firmness

Sleep testers have rated the mattress as being in the range of ‘medium‘ on the firmness level, providing the ideal balance between temperature control and skeletal support.

The mattress boasts excellent edge support for anyone sleeping on their back or on their side.

The top layers are firm enough to contour the body while providing efficient support and alignment.

Having said that, heavier individuals might notice some compression when sitting on specific areas of the mattress.

Despite that, there is enough edge support to prevent sinkage or fall off.

The GhostBed Luxe For Couples

Interestingly, the mattress itself has slightly more noticeable ‘bounce’ than other foam beds, because of the latex-like polyfoam used in the construction of the mattress.

Even with the added bounce, the Luxe still rates high on the motion isolation scale.

This extra level of motion absorption happens because of the way that the foam contours the body and only responds in areas where pressure or body weight is applied directly to the mattress.

It is highly unlikely that sleepers of any size will experience any sort of motion transfer – Meaning that you will not rouse your partner if you move around frequently during the night.

GhostBed Luxe Mattress Materials & Layers

Impressively, the second generation GhostBed is crafted using seven layers of high quality material, totalling 13″ of thickness.

  • the Ghostbed Luxe's layersThe first layer, Ghost Ice Fabric, is made using proprietary Japanese technology. This is the first part of the two step cooling process.
  • The second layer is one half-inch of Cooling Fiber, it works directly with the Ghost Ice Fabric to deliver an instant cooling effect.
  • The third layer is made using an entire inch of gel memory foam. The foam is quilted to allow it to contour to the body.
  • The fourth layer, known as the Ghost ice Layer, uses phase change technology to capture and dissipate heat so that the mattress does not heat up when the body temperatures rise.
  • Next, a second layer of gel memory roam is added to absorb any heat buildup that might be present and to facilitate greater airflow.
  • The sixth layer – the Ghost Bounce Layer – helps to prevent sleepers from sinking into the mattress and to keep the body properly aligned and well-supported.
  • Lastly, a heavy-duty foam core provides maximum support, added comfort and helps to extend the life of the mattress.

A Cooling Mattress For Hot Sleepers

The manufacturers for the GhostBed Luxe mattress invested over a decade into designing a mattress that not only stays cool, but also cools down the body of anyone sleeping on it.

This is possible thanks to the unique dual cooling process – including both surface cooling and deeper core cooling.

On the surface, Ghost Ice Fabric features a new cooling technology that is designed to absorb heat and keep the mattress surface cool to the touch.

Additionally, phase change material works from the center out to neutralize heat and provide a cool nights sleep.

Does it Smell When New?

Similar to many foam mattresses, there is the chance of some scents being released after shipping.

CertiPUR-US logoThese scents do not come from the mattress, but rather from the shipping material used.

In fact, the foams are all CertiPUR-US certified, which means they do not contain any harmful chemicals.

After three to four days, these smells should dissipate.

To speed up the off-gassing process, open a window or use a fan to increase airflow in the bedroom.

GhostBed Luxe Lifetime, Warrany & Care

Having been on the market for less than five years, it is difficult to judge what the actual lifespan of the Luxe mattress will be.

However, most foam mattresses should last at least eight years, with the premium models aiming at longer than 10 years.

It’s encouraging that the company offers a twenty year warranty against various defects.

Warranty

GhostBed offers 20 year warranty on their mattress products. The warranty is only valid for the original purchaser – The original purchaser being whomever purchased the mattress from the manufacturer or an approved dealer.

To start a warranty claim, contact customer service at 855-855-4499 or sleep@ghostbed.com

The warranty covers things like visible and lasting body impressions, physical flaws in the mattress, and manufacturers defects.

In addition to this impressive warranty, consumers are also treated to a 101 night risk-free sleep trial where they are free to bring their new mattress home and try it out for up to 101 days.

If, after purchasing the GhostBed Luxe mattress you are not completely satisfied within that timeframe, simply start a return request for a full refund.

The GhostBed Luxe Mattress Reviewed

With a net Queen price of $1,475, the GhostBed Luxe is not a budget mattress.

However, the mattress is well known for its cooling properties and ability to deliver support and comfort to sleepers of all positions and body types.

The bed seen form an angleThe company itself has received some negative feedback in terms of customer service, but we still find the mattress to be a worth considering if you are looking for a memory foam mattress without heating problems and your budget is not tight.

For this price point, you might also consider a nice latex mattress such as the Zenhaven or the Spindle.
