  • Heat Dispersion
  • Lifespan

Summary

The IDLE Dunlop and Talalay Latex Mattresses are filled with organic cotton and natural latex to make the nice firm feeling we expect from latex mattresses.

As we will explore, these mattresses are high-quality but not necessarily affordable.

With the option of choosing between Dunlop and Talalay latex, customers are better able to customize their mattresses.

These mattresses also allow you to pick between two different firmness levels so that you can flip the mattress to change the firmness.

Pros:

  • Pricey but worth it - The Dunlop version is offered for $1,499 in Queen
  • Available with either Dunlop or Talalay latex
  • Split firmness settings available
  • Firmer than the average bed
  • 18-month trial
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons:

  • Not recommended if you haven't tried a latex mattress
  • Talalay latex is more expensive than Dunlop

The IDLE Dunlop Latex and Talalay Latex Mattresses are good choices if you want the extra firm comfort that comes with latex.

Although these mattresses may not be the best option for couples due to the motion transfer, they have quite a bit of cooling technology that is only showed up by the IDLE Plush.

The natural latex and pocketed coils built-in provide an incredible amount of support for sleepers while still allowing them to sink into the layers.

As a two-sided mattress, the IDLE Latex is expected to last an extremely long time.

However, the extra cost might be a deal-breaker for certain people considering these mattresses.

What Type of Mattress is the IDLE Latex Mattress?

The IDLE Latex mattress is the eco-friendly option for sleepers looking for a hypoallergenic, dust-mite resistant, and anti-microbial mattress.

With two sides, IDLE Latex has a doubled lifetime and natural comfort.

It comes in two options: Dunlop latex, and Talalay latex.

This is the only latex option we find in the lineup of IDLE mattresses including the IDLE Plush, IDLE Orginal, and IDLE Hybrid.

How Firm is this Mattress?

Like the IDLE Hybrid, there are two options of firmness when it comes to the IDLE Latex mattress.

The IDLE All natural latex mattress with two people on it

While the medium firmness level is better suited for combo and side sleepers and ranks around a 6.5 level of firmness, the luxury firm level is focused more on the back and some stomach sleepers with a firmness rating of about a 9.

Additionally, the type of latex used can also impact the firmness slightly. Dunlop latex tends to feel denser, whereas Talalay latex will feel airier and softer.

Further customization of the firmness and support can be found in purchasing the IDLE Sleep Pillow.

How Many Layers Does it Have?

The IDLE Latex mattress contains 3 layers underneath its organic cotton cover.

Remember, these layers can be found on both sides of the mattress as it can be flipped.

the layers exposedStarting with the 6” base layer of coils, this is the layer that provides the most support and a bit of airflow through the mattress.

Next is a layer of coil support to regulate the tension throughout the mattress.

The next layer is 3” of latex for breathability, support, and reaction.

This layer also is hypoallergenic and anti-microbial.

The last layer is 1” of quilted wool that is incorporated into the cover for an added touch of softness and natural fire resistance.

In Summary:

  1. Base coil layer
  2. Coil support layer
  3. Latex (Dunlop or Talalay)
  4. Natural quilted wool

Does the IDLE Latex Mattress Sleep Hot?

Because the IDLE Latex mattress is designed with latex and a coil system, the mattress is naturally aerated and breathable.

Throughout the night, a sleeper should not overheat with the cooling features built-in.

Like the IDLE Plush, coolness is a nice benefit of the IDLE Latex.

Those that choose Talalay latex will have an even better cooling experience as this type of latex tends to be lighter than Dunlop.

How is Motion Transfer and Sinkage?

As with most mattresses with pocketed coils, we see quite a bit of motion transfer in the IDLE Latex mattress.

Surprisingly, there is quite a bit of sinkage to be found on this mattress as well, meaning that while the coils provide some support, the foam layers allow you to sink into the softer layers.

The IDLE Latex also has some nice edge support.

Keeping in mind all of these features, we might not recommend it for a couple with widely differing sleep patterns.

Especially if one is a light sleeper, as they will most likely be constantly woken up when their partner moves.

Does the IDLE Latex Mattress Smell When New?

With the natural cotton, wool, and latex used within the IDLE Latex, there should not be any off-gassing at all.

Typically, the mattresses that are manufactured with chemicals and plastics are the ones that have the worst odors when first opening.

As an eco-friendly option, that is not something to worry about with the IDLE Latex mattress.

Does it Require a Foundation?

The IDLE Latex does require a foundation for the best results possible.

This mattress works with any type of base, including a box spring. If you would like to stick to the same brand, IDLE does offer some options of their own including the IDLE Adjustable Base.

What Type of Cover does it Have?

the idle latex mattress coverThe IDLE Latex mattress boasts an all organic cotton cover wrapped completely around the mattress.

Because of the natural material, it allows air to flow through the mattress easily.

Rosettes are quilted through the mattress to hold all the layers together instead of glue for natural durability.

How Durable is the IDLE Latex Mattress?

Natural materials and products always tend to last longer than synthetic ones, and the IDLE Latex mattress is no exception.

Latex is an extremely durable material that can withstand a lot of wear and tear before breaking down.

With the ability to flip the mattress over for the same comfort, the durability of the mattress itself is already doubled.

How Much Does the IDLE Latex Mattress Cost?

There is quite a difference between the Dunlop Latex and Talalay Latex options.

Here are the sizes and prices for the Dunlop Latex version:

SizeRegular PriceDiscounted Price

Twin XL:$1,284$899

King:$3,397$2,378
Cal King:$3,397$2,378
Split King:$3,497$2,448

When looking at other eco-friendly mattresses, the IDLE Latex mattress seems pretty expensive.

But many people see the extra price as worth it.

Warranty & Trial Period of the IDLE Latex Mattress

View of IDLE All natural latex mattress from the front

Like we have come to expect, the IDLE Latex mattress offers a lifetime warranty covering any defects (on both sides of the mattress) and an 18-month trial period.

These are nice coverage periods compared to many other mattress brands.

With free shipping and free returns, the IDLE brand continues to impress with added customer value.

IDLE Latex Mattress Review – Our Verdict

As more people are searching for handmade and environmentally friendly products, it isn’t surprising that IDLE has jumped on the bandwagon.

While we love seeing IDLE coming out with an eco-friendly mattress version, there seem to be other mattresses that are cheaper and make an even better impact on the environment.

For a latex mattress, many people see the price as being worth it.

Being able to have so many options on the IDLE Latex mattress can be overwhelming to customers, although they may also see it as an easy way to customize their mattress.
