Summary

There are a lot of specialty premium mattresses out there – but ones that are formulated for heavier people are few and far between.

The Saatva HD is a luxury hybrid mattress built for anyone 300-500lbs with plush layers and extremely durable coils.

It’s designed with extra support in the middle of the mattress, and a 5-zone pressure-relief latex layer.

Anyone that is less than 300 pounds will likely find this mattress too firm; they will probably enjoy the Saatva Classic much more!

The Saatva HD is an extremely durable mattress and provides edge support, a responsive feel, and is 100% natural.

It combines memory foam and latex to prevent too far sinkage with the right amount of comfort.

Due to its high level of firmness, heavier people will be able to sleep on this much more comfortably than lighter folks.

While it does not offer the ability to change firmness levels like the Saatva Solaire, this is still a good option overall.

What Type of Mattress is the Saatva HD Mattress?

View of the Saatva HD mattress from an angleThe Saatva HD mattress is a good option for those on the heavier side.

This mattress provides the support needed with extra-strong coils within it, along with a plethora of breathable organic cotton and natural latex layers.

It does not sleep hot, like many luxury mattresses because it is not primarily made up of dense foam

The bed also has a 5-zone layer of pressure relief to cater to the various areas of a sleeper’s body.

How Firm is this Mattress?

While the firmness of a mattress can be a biased perspective, we found this mattress to be more on the firmer side – which makes sense.

A mattress that can withstand a heavier bodyweight will feel firmer, especially at first, to someone laying down because it has to support the weight.

With the added weight, you can sink more into the comfort layers without feeling stuck.

We would rate this mattress at about a 7 on the firmness scale of 1 to 10 (10 being very firm).

How Many Layers Does it Have?

The Saatva HD is very well thought-out and includes multiple complex layers.

Starting with what holds everything together, a dense foam encases the entire mattress for edge support and protection of the inner layers.

The base layer is made up of 25% stronger steel coils than the standard that is threaded with wire to limit motion transfer.

This provides a lot of support for the contouring layer above, which is made from a combination of memory foam and cushion foam.

The next layer is comprised of 5-zone latex support to target areas like the shoulders, hips, and back for the proper pressure relief.

To provide the antimicrobial benefit, a layer of cushiony pillow top is added on top.

Last but not least, the top layer consists of a hand-tufted finishing that locks all of the layers together and prevents shifting.

In summary:View of the Saatva HD mattress layers

  1. Edge support base
  2. High-durability coil base
  3. Contouring comfort layers
  4. Talalay latex with 5-zone support
  5. Organic cotton pillow top
  6. Hand-tufted finishing

Does the Saatva HD Mattress Sleep Hot?

Latex is a naturally breathable material and combined with breathable cotton and coils allow for some good airflow between the layers.

This mattress does not lack in this area and those that sleep hot should find that this is a decent option for them.

How is Motion Transfer and Sinkage?

Because of the amount of bounce that the coils provide, there can be a high level of motion transfer when sleeping with a partner.

If you have a restless partner, then, you might consider choosing a different mattress.

However, it does make up for it a little in terms of limited sinkage and good edge support around the mattress.

Does the Saatva HD Mattress Smell When New?

Like just about any other new mattress, there is some uncertainty as to whether or not there is a new bed smell.

With the Saatva HD, it is possible that you experience this chemical smell on arrival.

However, if you do, it should dissipate within a few weeks.

Does it Require a Foundation?

Any heavy-sleeping mattress will recommend a good foundation for extra support.

Saatva provides two foundation options (for different heights) right when you are adding your mattress to your cart.

This makes it much easier to find a foundation that will work with your Saatva HD mattress – you already know it will work perfectly!

What Type of Cover does it Have?

Organic cotton makes up the cover to provide breathability and antimicrobial features.

It is important to note, this cover is not removable as it is hand-tufted in place.

However, it can be spot cleaned with some water and soap.

View of the Saatva HD mattress from an angleHow Durable is the Saatva HD Mattress?

As we mentioned earlier, the steel coils used in the construction of this mattress are 25% stronger than the ones used industry-wide.

This bed is a lot stronger than most new mattresses we find on the market!

Natural latex and organic cotton materials combined with the steel coils imply that this mattress should last for a long time.

Warranty & Trial Period of the Saatva HD Mattress

Saatva provides a 20-year warranty and 180-night trial as well,View of the Saatva HD mattress with somebody on it

In other words, you don’t have to worry about getting it and not liking it or having an issue develop.

There is also free white glove delivery!

Compared to other mattresses, customer support Saatva provides is very good.

How Much Does the Saatva HD Mattress Cost?

Compared to other mattresses designed for bigger bodies, the Saatva HD seems to be a pretty good middle ground.

Currently, Saatva offers a discount of $200! Just use our code SALE200 at checkout to get these special prices:

SizeRegular PriceDiscounted Price
Twin:$1,499$1,299
Twin XL:$1,649$1,449

Queen:$2,599$2,399
King:$2,899$2,699
Cal King:$2,899$2,699
Split King:$3,299$3,099

It has a lot of benefits and features built-in that we feel warrants its price point.

Especially considering how durable it is and how long it will last.

Saatva HD Mattress Review – Our Verdict

The downside to the Saatva HD is that lighter people will most likely think it is too firm.

In addition, it might not be the best option for couples because of its motion transfer.

Overall, this is a good option for heavier bodies and anyone looking for a firmer mattress.

With a few luxury options that are specifically catered to heavier people, it is nice to see a well-known brand branching out to cater to this audience.

Sadly, this review is not from a ono-on-one with an true Saatva HD mattress—or it does not seem so. Not once does the reviewer mention any personal contact with the mattress. Every instance where the reviewer could have stated what he/she could have experienced, no reference to personal contact with the mattress was made.

This is extremely important to anyone who reviews a mattress which is a very personal purchase and having purchased the HD would have been more advantageous and helpful to a potential buyer.

      Hi RLB,

this is exactly the point: we don;t talk about our personal experiences with mattresses because it’s highly subjective… no two people feel the same about a product. If you want that kind of review, there are plenty of other sites. What we try to do here is much harder: we gather all the information we can and create an objective analysis.
