TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress Review

Updated: May 31, 2020 by Sam Fisher

TEMPUR-Adapt Ratings

  • Motion Isolation
  • Heat Dispersion
  • Lifespan

  • Price

Summary

The TEMPUR-Adapt is another good all-foam option to look at in the line of famous Tempur-Pedic mattresses.

This mattress has the thick top layer of memory foam that we have come to expect from the Tempur-Pedic brand.

In addition, the Adapt stands out for having a cool cover that helps you to sleep cooler than some other mattresses from this brand.

Despite the extra features, though, this mattress should still not be seen as a cool mattress to sleep on, nor is it clear if it is the coolest of all Tempur-Pedic mattresses.

As a whole, this is a premium foam mattress that is worth looking into if you have the extra budget to invest.

Pros:

  • Great motion isolation
  • Nice plush comfort of foam
  • Also available in a hybrid version
  • 10-year warranty
  • 90-day trial period

Cons:

  • Sleeps a little hot
  • Pricey compared to others - Queen-size is available for $2,099

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress comes in two different options – the medium, and the medium hybrid that just adds a coil layer).

While this mattress used to be their cheapest option, the Tempur-Cloud now beats it with Tempur’s most recent shuffling of bed offerings.

The TEMPUR-Adapt includes the brand’s well-known high-tech innovations with comfort and support to produce an all-around good medium mattress.

However, anyone looking for a softer mattress might try the Tempur-Cloud, and those looking for a variety of firmness levels, they might consider the Tempur-Breeze.

What Type of Mattress is the TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress?

This is an all-foam mattress that is both available in hybrid and all-foam designs.

This makes it great for those with problems like back pain.

However, those with lower budgets and those who like to remain cool while they sleep might not see this as the best option.

How Firm is this Mattress?

Both options offered for the TEMPUR-Adapt provide a medium level of firmness.

On our scale of 1 to 10 (10 being very firm), we rate this mattress at about a 6.

The layers of memory foam are what creates the firmness and allow for slow sinkage for maximum comfort.

How Many Layers Does it Have?

The TEMPUR-Adapt has four layers, starting with the original base structured for maximum support (the hybrid version also includes a layer of coils within this as well).

Next is a comfort layer, followed by the knit, antimicrobial cover.

Compared to the other Tempur mattresses, this seems to be one of the simplest constructions, even though it is not the cheapest option available.

In summary:

  1. Original TEMPUR® Support Layer
  2. TEMPUR-ES® Comfort Layer
  3. Coil System (Only in Hybrid Version)
  4. Cool-to-Touch Cover

Does the TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress Sleep Hot?

From what we have gathered across our research is that this mattress does tend to sleep hot.

With its memory foam layers that retain heat and barely any airflow or breathability features built-in, those that overheat should not pick this mattress.

One of the largest complaints we have found on the TEMPUR-Adapt is that it can sleep hot!

If you do tend to overheat, you might try the Tempur-Breeze, as it has specific technology worked into its layers.

This is in contrast to just a cool cover like what we find in the TEMPUR-Adapt.

How is Motion Transfer and Sinkage?

Motion transfer and sinkage will depend on which option you choose for your TEMPUR-Adapt mattress.

The “medium” option has very limited motion transfer and takes a little bit for the sleeper to start to sink (although they probably will not sink all that much with its firmness level).

On the other hand, the “medium hybrid” option has a little bit more motion transfer but less sinkage due to the bouncy coils incorporated.

The hybrid keeps the sleeper more on top of the mattress instead of sinking far into it – and can support heavier people as well.

Does the TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress Smell When New?

Like the Tempur-Breeze, the TEMPUR-Adapt offers white glove, free delivery.

The mattress itself comes in a full-size box, which means it hasn’t been compressed like typical boxed mattresses.

Although you might experience a chemical smell on arrival, this will dissipate within a week or so.

Does it Require a Foundation?

Just as the Tempur-Breeze and Tempur-Cloud require foundations, so does the TEMPUR-Adapt.

View of the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress from up close

There are a lot of reasons for this, but most cited is the support it provides your mattress.

To comply with the 10-year warranty, you should not use slat foundations or box springs, however.

If you are looking for an option specifically made for Tempur mattresses, check out the foundations they offer themselves.

What Type of Cover does it Have?

The largest benefit to the TEMPUR-Adapt cover is its antimicrobial treatment.

It can protect the mattress itself from allergens like dust and mold to keep it as fresh as possible.

Additionally, the Tempur website states that the cover has a “cool-to-touch” feel, although it will not do much for coolness as overheaters will need as we mentioned above.

The cover is not machine washable.

How Durable is the TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress?

With the durable construction and relatively simple overall design, we do expect this mattress to last the better part of its 10-year warranty.

If you are unsure of the investment this mattress requires, Tempur does offer a 90-day trial period as well – although you do typically have to pay to ship it back.

In overall durability, this mattress holds true to the longevity we typically find in the brand.

Warranty & Trial Period of the TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress

As stated, this mattress comes with a 10-year warranty and a 100-night trial period.

Although decent, other mattresses in the industry provide more comprehensive warranties and longer trial periods (with free shipping returns!)

Additionally, the white glove delivery feature is a distinctive benefit that Tempur offers with this mattress because it can get heavy and hard to maneuver.

For those looking for a well-known brand and that does not have a limitation on a budget, this might be a good option for you.

How Much Does the TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress Cost?

This is not the ideal mattress for budget shoppers.

The Tempur-Pedic brand is typically this way, as we find expensive prices across their inventory.

This is the price list as of this review's date:

  • Twin: $1,599
  • Twin XL: $1,599
  • Full: $1,949
  • Queen: $2,099
  • King: $2,799
  • Cal King: $2,799
  • Split King: $3,198
  • Split Cal King: $3,198

This is one of the Tempur lines that offer split king, California king, and split California king as well.

Compared to other similar premium mattresses, this is a pretty pricey option, especially considering the simple design.

TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress Review – Our Verdict

As a whole, this may not be the coolest Tempur-Pedic mattress but is still of very high quality.

However, across the premium mattress industry, the TEMPUR-Adapt seems to be way overpriced in terms of the features it provides.

One nice feature of this mattress is that it comes in both hybrid and all-foam designs with the signature cooling cover.

If you are still unsure which TEMPUR mattress is the right for you, check out our review of the Tempur-Cloud and the Tempur-Breeze.
