Tempur-Pedic has been in the mattress game for almost 30 years. As one of the pioneers of memory foam mattresses, this Swedish company knows their stuff when it comes to foam.

Thanks to their history and luxury reputation, Tempur-Pedic has become one of the highest-rated sleep brands in the world.

However, that reputation for luxurious sleep comes with a hefty price tag, which can be off-putting to prospective buyers. We recommend weighing your options before investing in your next mattress.

What Type of Mattress is the ProAdapt?

The ProAdapt is a memory foam mattress, which makes sense—after all, Tempur-Pedic is a brand known for their memory foam.

There are four different varieties of the ProAdapt mattress: Soft, Medium, Firm, and Medium Hybrid.

All of these mattresses will be great at giving you support where you need it, responding to the individual shape of your body.

That’s one of the biggest strengths of memory foam mattresses, and the ProAdapt does not disappoint.

The biggest difference between these four options is the firmness, and which firmness you choose is ultimately a matter of preference.

With that said, depending on your sleep style and body weight, some firmnesses are going to be more comfortable (and better for your back) than others.

ProAdapt Layers

All four varieties of ProAdapt mattress feature a SmartClimate dual cover system.

The removable outer cover is designed to help you sleep cool, while the super-stretchy inner layer provides a little extra bounce.

The ProAdapt foam layersBeneath the cover, though, each of the four mattresses has a different construction, so let’s take a look at them individually.

The Soft mattress features a “TEMPUR-ES” comfort layer, which is the softest foam you’ll find in any ProAdapt mattress.

Beneath that, you’ve got a “TEMPUR-APR” support layer, which Tempur-Pedic calls their “most pressure-relieving material ever.”

The Medium mattress has that same ultra-pressure-relieving support layer, but it’s topped with an “Original TEMPUR” comfort layer for a firmer, more balanced feel.

In the Firm mattress, those two foams swap places, using the TEMPUR-APR as a comfort layer and the Original Tempur for support.

This puts the firmer layer on top, giving you a solid sleep surface.

Finally, there’s the Medium Hybrid, which features the same foams as the Soft mattress—super-soft meets super-supportive—on top of over 1,000 spring coils.

The Medium Hybrid is a great option if you’re looking for something with more bounce, responsiveness, and durability.

How Firm is the ProAdapt Mattress?

Tempur-Pedic’s memory foam mattresses tend to land at the higher end of the firmness scale.

This means the Firm mattress is quite firm, while the Soft mattress is what other brands might call a medium firmness rating.

As you’re thinking about firmness, it’s important to remember that the density of memory foam depends on temperature. The warmer it gets, the softer it gets.

Even over the course of a night, it’ll get softer as it warms with your body heat.

So, if your room temperature is a little warmer than usual, you might have a softer experience with a ProAdapt.

It’s also important to know that the ProAdapt—like many memory foam mattresses—will start off very firm and soften over time.

Since this adjustment process can take a while, Tempur-Pedic recommends allowing up to 30 days to fully “break in” a new memory foam mattress.

Are Motion Isolation and Edge Support Good?

Memory foam is well-known for its motion-isolating qualities.

The ProAdapt mattress from an angleTempur-Pedic has a lot of experience making memory foam mattresses, so it’s no surprise that the ProAdapt is excellent at motion isolation.

This makes the ProAdapt a great choice for couples—if you toss and turn, or have to get up in the middle of the night, your partner’s sleep won’t be disturbed.

As far as edge support goes, it isn’t terrible, but it isn’t outstanding, either.

There isn’t much extra bracing at the edges, so if you doze off near the edge, it would be just as easy to roll onto the floor as to roll back the middle of your cozy mattress.

Does the Tempur ProAdapt Sleep Hot?

For memory foam in particular, this is a very important question.

One of the biggest complaints against memory foam is its tendency to sleep hot.

This is an unfortunate side effect of the foam’s greatest strength: as it gets warmer and softer, it conforms more closely to the shape of the sleeper’s body.

A night on a memory foam mattress can go very quickly from snugly to sweaty.

Fortunately, Tempur-Pedic has included some technology to help their mattresses avoid this problem.

The cover on any ProAdapt mattress is designed to feel cool to the touch, which should go a long way toward preventing that unpleasant heat.

Customers have offered mixed reviews when it comes to the heat of the ProAdapt, but the overall consensus is a positive one.

Any especially hot sleepers might want to look elsewhere, but for most folks, the ProAdapt should offer plenty of cooling power.

Does the Mattress Smell When New?

A perennial worry among mattress-buyers is the question of whether their new mattress will have an unpleasant, chemical smell once it’s unpacked.

This is a common occurrence with foam mattresses, and it should be noted that the ProAdapt is likely to have that “new mattress” smell.

After a few days, however—if not sooner—the smell should dissipate.

We recommend leaving the sheets off of your new mattress until the scent has disappeared.

How Durable is the Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt?

The biggest perk of Tempur-Pedic’s decades-long history in the mattress industry is their reliability.

A girl relaxing on the tempur-pedic mattressWhen they say a mattress will last 10 years, they know what they’re talking about.

Unlike many newer mattress companies, Tempur-Pedic has been around long enough to verify that their mattresses last as long as promised.

The ProAdapt’s durability is reinforced by its size.

It clocks in at 12” high, a solid 2 inches more than standard for this category.

That extra height gives the mattress some extra durability (not to mention the added comfort).

Does It Need a Frame?

The 10-year warranty is only valid with an appropriate frame, so yes!

The ProAdapt is not intended to rest directly on the floor.

Instead, it will have a longer lifespan if it’s used with a very sturdy bed-frame—ideally, something slatted with plenty of cross-bracing.

How is the Mattress Delivered?

All Tempur-Pedic mattresses come with free “White Glove Delivery.”

They don’t stop at delivering the mattress right to your doorstep—they’ll take it inside and set it up right where you want it.

If you’d rather buy a mattress the old-fashioned way, you can also purchase a ProAdapt at one of Tempur-Pedic’s brick-and-mortar stores.

There’s a whole plethora of sizes available for the ProAdapt, including the less common split king and split California king dimensions.

All the sizes available are standard dimensions, and as we mentioned earlier, you can expect a 12” profile.

Trial Policy & Warranty

Like all Tempur-Pedic mattresses, a ProAdapt mattress comes with a 90 night trial.

If you decide you aren’t happy with the mattress, you’ll be able to return it within 90 days of the delivery.

Tempur-Pedic does recommend spending at least 30 nights getting used to your new mattress before deciding whether to return it.

There’s also a 10-year limited warranty as long as you buy directly from Tempur-Pedic or a recognized distributor.

There are a few terms and conditions that can invalidate your warranty, so be sure to give those a read before setting up your new mattress!

How Much Does the ProAdapt Cost?

The Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt in a room

Tempur-Pedic is a pricey brand. They’re well-known as purveyors of luxury mattresses, so they’re able to charge more for the sake of name recognition.

All four varieties of the ProAdapt are equally priced, so there’s no trade-off between comfort and a few extra dollars.

Here are the lowest prices available as we write:

  • Twin: $2,499
  • Twin XL: $2,499
  • Queen: $2,999
  • King: $3,699
  • Cal King: $3,699
  • Split California King: $4,998
  • Split King: $4,998
  • Full: $2,849

Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt Review Summary:

The ProAdapt—especially the firmer varieties—offers great support for anyone dealing with joint pain.

There’s also very low motion transfer, great for anyone who’s sharing a bed.

The four different firmness options provide a degree of customizability you don’t often find, so you’ll be able to pick the level of firmness that best meets your needs.

The proprietary cool-to-touch cover should keep you from overheating, though it isn’t a perfect guarantee and won’t be enough cooling power for everyone.

Like all Tempur-Pedic mattresses, the ProAdapt comes with free white-glove delivery, which can be incredibly helpful if you’re worried about installing a mattress by yourself.

Once it’s delivered, if you decide you aren’t a fan, you have a 90-night trial period—if you don’t love the mattress, you can send it back.

You’ll have to let the ProAdapt air out before putting sheets on it, since an initial chemical smell is likely.

The ProAdapt is definitely one of the more expensive mattresses we’ve reviewed—you aren’t just paying for quality, you’re paying for the Tempur-Pedic brand name and their luxury reputation.

For these reasons, we recommend taking a look at the Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt series if you’re a fan of high-quality memory foam and don’t mind paying a little extra.

Still haven’t found the perfect memory foam mattress? Some of our latest reviews might help you finally find the good night’s sleep you’ve been looking for!

Thank you for your analysis. I’ve spent hours trying to find a comparison of Sleep Number and Tempura-Pedic’s ProAdapt Hybrid Medium, and most sites seem to represent mattress dealers in disguise; none of them of course sell Sleep Number, so no rating of it is offered. Consumer Reports site is not available without a subscription, and we bailed on ours years ago when they changed their magazine too much.

I thought I’d buy a Sleep Number model, but after trying the TP Hybrid we were impressed, especially with it not having the sweating/heat issue it used to. Your articles have been very helpful.

Our one big concern is the wife, and sometimes I, like a heat pad/blanket under us to start cold nights with. I understand that’s not good for the TP mattresses, and probably any memory foam mattress including Sleep Number models. It may in fact void warranties.

      Hi Joel,

it really depends on how you use the heat pad. If it’s at a reasonable setting, there will be no damage!
