In this review we are evaluating the Purple mattress (formerly known as the Original Purple mattress).

Purple has been know for a while now thanks to its success and has released several products including an adjustable bed frame, a pillow and a mattress protector. All called Purple of course!

The Purple Mattress is comprised of a dual-layer foam base and its patented Purple Grid.

This mattress is famous for its balance of firmness and softness only attainable by its hyper-elastic polymer grid.

It has plenty of breathability and caters to different sleeping positions because of its grid structure.

This is the most affordable among the Purple Mattress series, among the Purple Hybrid and the Purple Hybrid Premier, it does offer some unique value.

The Purple Mattress’s durable layers and construction are expected to last most people over 10 years.

Additionally, with minimal motion transfer and breathability, couples tend to especially appreciate this mattress.

What Type of Mattress is the Purple Mattress?

The Purple is a one-of-a-kind, featuring a grid made of a special “rubber” with unique elastic properties.

It is more responsive than memory foam and allows for unconstrained air circulation, which means almost no heat build up.

If you want an affordable mattress that is great for back support, the Purple Mattress is a wonderful option to consider.

The Purple Hybrid from the same manufacturer is a slight step up in terms of quality and price.

If you want the highest quality possible from this manufacturer, the Purple Hybrid Premier is the best option to look at.

How Firm is this Mattress?

This mattress is classified as medium firmness, and we would rate it at about a 6.5 on a scale from 1 to 10.

The 2-inch Purple Grid allows for support throughout the mattress as well as a reinforced edge, something that many people tend to miss with normal mattresses.

This grid is able to flex underneath focus points like shoulders and hips to cradle them while offering support for the other parts of the body.

Unfortunately, this mattress does not seem to quite have the correct relief for shoulders and hips.

While the use of the Purple Plush Pillow might relieve the shoulders a little bit, the firmness of the mattress for the hips is a little too much.

How Many Layers Does it Have?

The layersThe Purple Mattress has two layers, with the base being a dual-layer (so technically, three layers).

The base is made up of a high-density double layer of foam to support the grid.

The top layer – a.k.a. the Purple Grid – was created to balance the need for firmness and support throughout the pressure points of the body.

Does the Purple Mattress Sleep Hot?

The Purple Grid has around 2,500 air channels to move heat away from the sleeper at night.

Unlike mattresses made of foam, this grid does not retain any of the heat that its subjected to – for the most part, it is able to pass right through.

Those that tend to overheat during the night will find that the Purple Mattress is a great option for them with its cooling grid support layer.

With a lot of bounce, you won’t ever feel like you are sinking very far into the mattress itself.

Its cover promotes airflow for the mattress and only adds to the Purple Mattress’s overall comfort.

How is Motion Transfer and Sinkage?

If you’ve seen any of the Purple Mattress’s advertisements, you’d probably easily recognize the raw egg test they show on the mattress.

For those of you that haven’t seen it, the ad focuses on how the Purple Mattress is able to cradle and support raw eggs without breaking them when a weight is dropped on them.

It makes for a unique selling point and even more interesting commercial!

With that being said, sinkage is pretty balanced when someone is sitting or lying on this mattress.

Typically, the grid is able to hold the sleeper up in order to keep them from sinking low into the bed.

As a whole, motion transfer is also very limited.

Because the grid is able to flex and move without interfering with other aspects of the mattress, couples should not have an issue with waking each other up when turning over at night.

Does it Have any Smell?

Much like the Casper mattresses, not many people have complained about a smell coming from the Purple Mattresses.

Those that do have reported a “woodsy” smell and have reported that after letting the mattress air out for a few hours, the smell dissipates on its own.

The polyurethane foam, which is usually responsible for off-gassing, is independently certified by CertiPUR-US to be safe from toxic chemicals. And the other materials are guaranteed non-toxic by Purple as well.

Does it Require a Foundation?

This mattress does require a foundation to help support it.

It is important to note that the Purple team do not recommend using a box spring set underneath the mattress because it can alter or warp the mattress itself.

Instead, using a bed frame with slats and a foundation is probably the best way to support it.

What Type of Cover does it Have?

the mattress coverThe Purple Mattress has a stretchy knit cover designed with coolness in mind.

The cover hasn’t been shown to impact how the mattress feels overall and is removable.

But, like the Casper covers, it is not washable (and if you end up washing it anyway, it most likely will shrink and not be able to cover the mattress anymore).

Purple Mattress Mattress Durability

This mattress comes with a 10-year warranty that covers any defects.

With that being said, however, we haven’t seen much evidence of there being anything frequently wrong with the mattress itself.

When paired with proper maintenance and protections like mattress protectors, a Purple Mattress should be durable enough to stick around for longer than the warranty period.

How Much Does the Purple Mattress Cost?

Most Purple products, including this mattress, are sold on Amazon as well, but it’s better to purchase them directly from Purple.com as they offer better conditions and price promotions.

The mattress prices as we write are as follows:

  • Twin: $649
  • Twin XL: $799
  • Full: $999
  • Queen: $1,149
  • King: $1,449
  • Cal King: $1,449
  • Split King: $1,598

While the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier offer more comforts and support, their value to cost ratio seems to be a bit skewed.

Alongside the mattress itself, Purple offers other additional accessories like the Purple Plush Pillow and many different blankets and bed frames to choose from, which also might alter someone’s decision to purchase.

100-Night Risk-Free Sleep Trial and Guarantee

Purple stands firmly behind their product with their 100-day, 100% money back guarantee.

This 100 night risk-free trial affords consumers ample time to try out and experience their new state of the art mattress.

If after sleeping on it for 30 to 100 nights you are still unhappy then contact customer service and they will arrange for pickup of your mattress.

There are no restocking fees.

How is Purple’s Warranty?

The Purple presents with a 10 year warranty, that, according to our data, is comparable to other modern mattresses within the same price range.

Purple Mattress Review – Our Verdict

The Purple Mattress seems to be a great choice for back and stomach sleepers because of its firmness.

girl sleeping on the Purple mattressHowever, side sleepers might not feel the relief they need on their pressure points to warrant this purchase – in which case, they might consider trying the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier, as they might be better suited for side sleepers with their extra inches of foam top layer.

With a durable grid able to support your body even to the edge of the mattress, this is a great choice for people that like to change positions a lot or that sleep with someone in the same bed.

You can expect this mattress to last a long time and continue to support different weights as long as it is maintained properly.

For anyone looking for a medium level of firmness and support in their mattress without any extra fanciness, the Purple Mattress would be a good option to choose.
