This mattress contains multiple layers of Adaptive foam and supportive spring coils
This model features more breathability and airflow than the Original.
If you like an extra bouncy bed with medium firmness, this very well might be a good option for you.
Additionally, this mattress offers considerable edge support, little sinkage, and only some motion transfer, meaning this mattress might also benefit couples.
Tuft & Needle is a pioneer in the mattress-in-a-box space and over the years hasn’t disappointed its numerous customers.
What Type of Mattress is the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress?
This mattress is the pride and joy of the Tuft & Needle brand for its premium breathability and level of quality support.
This high level of support makes it great for both heavy and lighter body weights.
Back and combo sleepers tend to benefit the most from the Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress.
However, side and stomach sleepers might not experience the full formula of zoned support and cushion in the necessary areas.
Although this mattress prides itself on having premium support, it’s worth noting that many people won’t see it as adequate.
How Firm is this Mattress?
As far as firmness goes, the Tuft & Needle Hybrid ranks at about a 6.5 on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being extra firm).
However, this can be a little misleading as a large number of coils provide an extreme bounce – so while this is a firm mattress, it does react well to weight.
Side sleepers probably will often not benefit from the extra bounciness as they might not be able to sink far enough into the mattress to get enough relief on their pressure points.
Combo sleepers, on the other hand, will like the fact that they won’t feel stuck and can easily move around into other positions while on the bed.
Since there is no zoned support, stomach sleepers might feel their hips uncomfortably getting out of line.
How Many Layers Does it Have?
The Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress has a lot going on from the inside.
It starts with a base foam layer before going into the 6” layer of springs.
Next is a transition layer of foam, which provides something for the coils to react against.
On top of that is another layer of coils – this time, it is a lot smaller of a section and allows the sleeper a bit of a buffer before hitting the firmer layers underneath.
The second layer from the top is another 2” of Adaptive foam to provide the cushioning for side sleepers and also includes gel beads and graphics to incorporate a bit of breathability.
Last but not least, the top layer is a quilted pillow foam that is also infused with carbon to continue allowing air to flow through.
- Quilted pillow foam
- 2″ of adaptive foam
- First layer of coils
- Transition foam layer
- 6″ coil layer.
Does the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress Sleep Hot?
Graphite and cooling gel beads have been infused into a few layers of this mattress to provide better airflow.
Additionally, the cover allows further breathability with its “open-cell construction,” lending a fairly cool overall mattress.
If you’re someone that gets hot at night, this mattress should a good option to consider for keeping you cool.
How is Motion Transfer and Sinkage?
Because the mattress has quite a few coils within it, it’s much more likely to offer some motion transfer.
Couples should be wary of this, as there is a good chance that they will feel their partner getting out of bed at night or moving around into different sleeping positions.
The Tuft & Needle Hybrid doesn’t allow too much sinkage, however, and offers pretty good edge support from the coil layers.
Does the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress Smell When New?
The Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress might have a little bit of an odor when first opening the box and packaging.
Simply allow the mattress to air out for a few days and the smell should go away (this is an issue many boxed mattresses have but doesn’t last long).
Does it Require a Foundation?
The official Tuft & Needle recommendation is to use some sort of support with spacing (slats) no more than 5” apart.
This could mean that you could use box springs, although the mattress is compatible with other types of bases as well.
If you tend to overheat, you might consider a slatted base just to encourage even more airflow!
A bonus for this mattress is that it should be able to work with just about whatever type of bed frame or box spring you already have.
What Type of Cover Does it Have?
The Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress cover is non-removable and made of a soft, 1” knit cover.
It’s breathable and allows air to flow through to cool off sleepers with its infusion of carbon.
Although the cover is not removable, is fairly easy to spot clean. Just use a mild detergent with warm water and avoid rubbing it too energetically (read more about the proper cleaning techniques here).
Then, make sure it’s entirely dry before placing back the sheets.
In order to prevent any spots, it’s always smart to use a mattress protector.
How Durable is the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress?
Spring coil systems have been around for a long time, and for good reason – they’re durable!
With the construction of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress, you can rest assured that it will last for quite some time.
The materials of this mattress along with high-quality construction processes of the manufacturer ensure that this mattress is considerably durable.
Warranty & Trial Period of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress
Tuft & Needle offers a 100-night trial period to ensure you love your mattress if you buy.
They also offer a 10-year limited warranty, but it’s important to read what all it covers so you understand what all is covered.
This is a competitive warranty and trial period, although a tad shorter than what some other mattress manufacturers provide.
How Much Does the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress Cost?
While the Tuft & Needle Original mattress started at a very affordable entry-level price, the cost has gone up in this model due to the number of layers and overall complexity in the Hybrid.
If you buy today, you can get a nice discount of $100 with our coupon TED100, resulting in these low prices:
|Size||Regular Price||Discounted Price|
This mattress is an upgrade to the original, so it’s important to keep that in mind while noticing the difference in prices.
Although the prices may be a bit of a turn-off, they are still fair enough when we consider the overall quality of this mattress.
The Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress Review – Our Verdict
As a whole, this is a good mattress to consider if you want a nice balance between the plush comfort of a foam bed along with the firmness and durability of a coil system.
While there is quite a difference in price between the Original, the Mint and the Hybrid, we believe it makes up for it in added luxury.
The Tuft & Needle Hybrid’s superb set of layers balanced between coils and plush foam comfort balance together well.
