- 7 What’s the Best Mattress For Your Budget?
Getting a new mattress is a major decision. If you’re getting enough sleep, you’re probably spending about a third of your day in bed.
With that much time in the sack, you should make sure you’ve invested in a mattress that will be comfortable and supportive.
While the average American only spends about 49 minutes in the car every day, they’re more than happy to spend thousands of dollars in upkeep on their vehicle every year.
For about one sixth the price of the average annual cost of car upkeep, you can make a one-time investment in a high quality mattress that might make a massive difference in your life, both asleep and awake.
But not everyone can afford a top shelf mattress. Sometimes you just need a cheap, temporary replacement, a mattress for guests or a fast-growing kid.
If you’re sleeping on an innerspring mattress with springs poking through the cover, there are options to upgrade your sleeping situation no matter what your budget.
Finding the Best Mattress is All About Your Needs
In this guide, we’ll take you through the best mattresses for every price point, from the cheapest of the cheap to ultra-luxury mattresses.
For the purposes of this guide, we’ll use the queen size models of each mattress as the benchmark for price – if you’re willing to sleep on a twin mattress, you may be able to find less expensive versions of the mattresses listed here.
If you have any injuries or back pain related to the way you sleep, the lowest end options may not give you the back support and comfort you need. Actually, they might make your condition worse.
Talk to a medical professional to diagnose the issue, ask them what sort of mattress you need, and take a look at our guide to the best mattresses for chronic back pain to get a full run-down of the mattresses that might help alleviate your aches and pains.
So if you’re ready to find the best mattress for your price range and start sleeping comfortably, read on!
The Best Cheap Mattresses (Free or less than $100)
When you really need a new mattress but just don’t have any cash, your options are somewhat limited.
Thankfully, there are some super low budget mattress options that make it possible for you to upgrade your bed.
Some of these mattresses are far less than ideal – for example, if you’re picking up a mattress off of Craigslist, you should take every precaution possible to sterilize and clean the mattress or you may be inviting bed bugs or worse into your home.
Try these cheap mattresses if you need to make an upgrade right now:
Goodwill is a well-established thrift store chain. People donate items to Goodwill, and they clean the items up and resell them. You can find everything at Goodwill, from clothing and home furnishings to cutlery and yes, mattresses.
The issue with Goodwill is that what you see is what you get – there’s no stock in the back of the store, you simply choose from the items that other people have donated.
This can be a big boon or a pain depending on who’s stopped by to donate recently. Some of the larger Goodwill locations scan their inventory and put it up online, and you can always call ahead and ask the employees at the store whether or not they have a mattress in stock.
Just because it’s a thrift store, you shouldn’t expect to walk out with a mattress for less than $50.
Used doesn’t always mean cheap – you can find some very high quality items at most Goodwill stores, especially if you make a trip to a wealthy town where people are more likely to give away nice stuff.
But you’ll have to pay for that quality.
Craigslist can be a good place to pick up a mattress, provided you do your research and take the time to clean up whatever mattress or bedding you pick up.
You should also be conscious of your safety when meeting strangers – try to meet up at a public location like the parking lot of a grocery store or a strip mall. That way, if anything goes wrong, there will be lots of people around to help.
It also makes sense to treat the mattress with disinfectant and spray it for bugs – the last thing you want is to bring some nasty little parasites into your home along with your new mattress.
If you’re really broke, sometimes turning to family is the best option. Moms, dads, aunts, uncles, brothers, and sisters may all be able to help you out.
You may know them a little better than a stranger on Craigslist, but you should apply the same precautions as you would for a Craigslist mattress – even family can unknowingly deliver the gift of bedbugs, lice, and other parasitic bugs
If you want a brand new bed at an extremely low price, it’s time to head for Ikea. They offer a variety of mattresses around the $100 price point. While Ikea furniture isn’t necessarily known for its durability, it’s inexpensive, easy to set up, and aesthetically pleasing.
If you’re on a really tight budget, there’s no need to pick up a pricey bed frame with the mattress – at the $100 price point, it will work just as well on the floor as on a bed frame or foundation.
You can also order Ikea products online with ease, which makes it less of a pain to actually acquire your mattress – not to mention that it removes the need to wander around the showroom and tantalize yourself with products that are out of your budget.
While it probably won’t work for the long term, Sound Asleep makes some top notch inflatable mattresses that can fill in while you save up for an innerspring or memory foam mattress.
Their beds are available on Amazon.com, which means cheap and easy shipping, and you’ll never discover that they’re out of stock when you’re ready to buy.
Just remember that these air mattresses are not for long-term use – this mattress will be a stopgap, not a long-term solution (if you want a serious air mattress, check out that section in our Best Mattress guide).
The Best Low Price Mattresses ($100 – $700)
So you’ve saved up a little bit of cash and are ready to take your nighttime comfort to the next level.
These low price mattresses won’t provide the durability and quality of some of the higher end models, but they’ll be a major step up from a hand-me-down or thrift store mattress.
They also tend to have shorter warranties than higher-priced mattresses.
This is the price range where memory foam mattresses (widely agreed to be the gold standard for modern mattress materials) start to make an appearance.
If you have a few hundred dollars saved up, these low price mattresses might work for you.
Nectar is a young company enjoying a lot of success thanks to its winning combination of a quality mattress for a relatively low price.
In fact, in terms of quality their mattress can be compared to many famous online brands, but the price is simply unbeatable.
For example, you can have a Nectar in Queen for just $699 with our coupon TED125 (it will give you $125 off + 2 free pillows.)
It’s a very well balanced mattress which is suitable for pretty much all sleeping positions and you can try it risk-free for an entire year.
Zinus is another online-only company that delivers cheap mattresses by cutting out the middleman. They specialize in memory foam, iCoil and foam-spring hybrid mattresses, and have wowed consumers with their durability and comfort.
They also have a neat quiz that can help you determine exactly the right mattress for your sleep style.
Check out our review of their Sleep Master Ultima Comfort here.
Signature Sleep makes high quality innerspring and memory foam mattresses that don’t cost a fortune. We were very impressed with their products as well – take a look at our Contour 8 mattress review to get the full scoop.
At prices under $400 for good mattresses, Signature Sleep is among the best of the low price mattresses.
DHP is focused on futons, but they also make a decent mattress for less than $200. You aren’t going to get memory foam or even innerspring support with DHP – all of their mattresses are stuffed with polyester, like a standard futon mattress.
These mattresses are no-frills, but if you’re short on cash they should fit your budget perfectly.
Denver Mattress Company
The Denver Mattress Company is a direct-to-consumer factory retailer. They let you bypass the mattress showroom (and the markups that come with it) and take home the savings.
Their Doctor’s Choice model and other innerspring mattress options can cost as little as $400 – not too bad for a brand new mattress.
If you do order from the Denver Mattress Company, consider ordering a bed foundation – failing to use one can void your new mattress warranty.
DreamFoam is an up and coming company that offers latex mattresses, memory foam mattresses and regular foam (poly foam) mattresses at a very reasonable price.
With queen-size options for all their mattresses under $700 and easy online ordering, DreamFoam makes a fantastic entry-level mattress.
Sleep Innovations has been making top quality memory foam and gel foam mattresses for over 20 years right here in the USA.
With all of their queen-size options coming in at under $600, Sleep Innovations might be the best manufacturer for people who need a low-price mattress but don’t want to sacrifice comfort and durability for a lower price tag.
Take a look at our in-depth mattress review of all seven Sleep Innovations models.
Serta Perfect Sleeper
Serta is one of the best-recognized names in the mattress market. Their innerspring mattresses were market leaders for years until the memory foam mattresses market started picking up speed, and it’s not hard to see why – they’re durable, comfortable, and have a great warranty.
While memory foam and hybrid models of the Perfect Sleeper are available, the higher quality materials bump the price above $700.
To get the best deal on a Serta Perfect Sleeper, you’ll have to stick with an innerspring mattress, like the Brougham model.
Tuft & Needle
At about $600 for a queen size mattress, Tuft & Needle promises comfortable, restful sleep at a reasonable price point. Instead of standard memory foam, Tuft & Needle mattresses are made with polyurethane foam.
While the material is nearly as comfortable and durable as standard memory foam, it’s much less expensive – and that means that Tuft & Needle passes the savings onto you.
If you’re considering buying one, check out our in-depth Tuft & Needle mattress review.
Comfort Dreams sells their mattresses through retailers like Target, WalMart, Overstock.com, and Amazon.com.
With queen size memory foam mattresses available for under $400, Comfort Dreams should be on the list for any budget-conscious mattress shopper.
Since they aren’t sold in mattress showrooms you won’t get a chance to try before you buy, but their generous warranty and return policy should ease your mind.
The Best Mid-Price Mattresses ($700 – $1,800)
If you’re sick of replacing your bed every few years and want to take advantage of some of the more luxurious and modern materials in your new mattress, these mid-price mattresses may work for you.
You won’t find the very top of the line models in this section, but for $1,800 or less you can get a luxurious mattress that will last you a long time.
Just remember – a higher price tag doesn’t necessarily mean a better mattress or a more comfortable night’s sleep.
Many of the top performers in our guide to the best mattresses of 2018 fall in this category, while some of those in the high price and luxury categories didn’t make the cut.
DreamCloud is a relatively new brand but was able to come up with a very good mattress for a reasonable price ($1,199 with our $200 discount applied automatically.)
What makes this product very interesting is the smart combination of the most popular materials: latex, memory foam, high quality Cashmere wool and coil technology.
On top of its high quality, the DreamCloud comes with some exceptional perks: the Everlong Warranty (yes, it lasts forever) and a free reconditioning within the first 5 years of ownership.
This means that if your mattress gets somehow spoiled (like stains on the cover) or for example if you feel that the foam isn’t as supportive as it used to, they will make the mattress exactly like new, for free. This is unheard of.
Another entrant in the “bed-in-a-box” market, Saatva takes a holistic approach to delivering you a restful night’s sleep.
Saatva mattresses use a unique coil-on-coil construction to lend extra durability and comfort to what would otherwise be a plain old innerspring mattress.
If you generate a lot of heat when you sleep and need a mattress that keeps you cool, Saatva mattresses are a great choice. The materials and coil-on-coil design help air to circulate through the mattress and keep the temperature down.
As an added bonus, the bio-soy foam Saatva uses will not give off that distinctive chemical smell that plagues many memory foam mattresses.
Before you hop online and order one, make sure to take a look at our Saatva mattress review.
Leesa is one of the modern “bed-in-a-box” mattresses that has taken the market by storm. Its construction has three layers of specialized foam for comfort and support.
What’s different than other memory foam mattresses is the unique core support layer that provides more stability for sleepers who like a firmer mattress.
Leesa uses Avena Foam, a proprietary blend that customers love for its comfort and coolness.
If you’re thinking about ordering one, make sure to read our Leesa mattress review first.
The WRIGHT W1.27 is the result of years of research and study. The WRIGHT team takes a scientific approach to mattress manufacturing, developing cutting-edge materials and construction techniques to deliver the most comfortable mattress possible, and at around $1,300 the W1.27 is a steal.
With a top layer of high density memory foam, two middle layers of WRIGHT’s proprietary polymer-reinforced Zero Gravity foam, and a foundation of super high density foam, the WRIGHT W1.27 gives you the comfort, support, and coolness that you want.
The Winkbed is an interesting entry into the hybrid mattress market. Instead of relying on memory foam alone for comfort, the Winkbed features a 2” pillow-top cover on top of 2” of memory foam encased coils for durability and support.
The foam encased coils are held up by 7.5” of high profile coils and a foundation layer consisting of 2” of support foam. This construction minimizes motion transfer while still allowing for a cool, comfortable sleep.
This mattress is getting very enthusiastic ratings and we recently wrote our review, which you can read here.
The Amerisleep Liberty provides the comfort and durability of a mattress three times its cost.
The durable foam construction provides excellent edge support and bounce back – you won’t find yourself sleeping in a permanent depression on an Amerisleep Liberty.
With three layers of supportive, comfortable foam that promotes air circulation, the Amerisleep Liberty mattress should be at the top of anyone’s list of mid-priced mattresses.
Loom & Leaf
The Loom & Leaf is Saatva’s answer to high end traditional mattresses, and it comes at a mid-range price.
It’s a multi-layered memory foam mattress, but unlike most memory foam mattresses, Saatva uses a plant-based memory foam along with medical grade cooling gel to stop you from overheating.
The mattress is constructed with a 2” top layer of gel foam, supported by 2.5” of visco-elastic memory foam, 2” of transitional support foam, and 5.5” of high density support foam.
All that foam gives you great comfort and support without leaving you sinking into the middle of the mattress.
Helix Sleep mattresses are becoming extremely popular, and it’s mostly because of the extensive customization they allow during the ordering process.
This is a major departure from your average mattress buying experience where you have to pick between a couple of firmness levels (if you are lucky).
Rather than simply hoping that “firm,” “medium-firm” and “soft” are descriptive enough before plunking down hundreds of dollars for a mattress, Helix customers go through a detailed questionnaire to determine exactly the right firmness and materials to fit your body.
Helix mattresses can even be customized differently on each side – if you sleep with a partner, this option is a godsend. Instead of tossing and turning on a mattress that’s made for your partner, you can both sleep soundly and comfortably.
Before you buy one, check out our Helix mattress review for an in-depth look at its options and features.
The Best High Price Mattresses ($1,800 – $5,000)
If you’ve got some money set aside and want to make an investment in a mattress that will give you many years of comfortable sleep, these high price mattresses might be just right for you.
The Astrabeds HarmonyBed is made of durable, all-natural latex. Latex is much pricier than memory foam, but it provides great comfort and bounce-back and lasts much longer.
The Harmony Bed features a top layer of wool to wick moisture away from your body while you sleep, supported by three 3” layers of certified organic latex.
In addition, the firmness level can be adjusted for each mattress side, making it the ideal choice for couples with different preferences.
It all adds up to a great night’s sleep that you can rely on for years. That’s why we selected this mattress as top pick in our Best Mattress Guide.
Another 100% latex entry into the high priced mattress category, the Zenhaven mattress has been well received for its long-lasting comfort. This is the third line of mattresses offered by Saatva, which we covered above.
The Zenhaven mattress features four layers of Talalay latex, each one made with a slightly different density.
The multiple layers of supportive foam provide great air circulation, comfort, and bounce back with little degradation in performance over time.
It’s also reversible – if you don’t like the firmness of one side, simply flip the mattress for a different experience. Chances are you’ll find the good night’s sleep you’re looking for on one of them.
Learn more about it directly on Zenhaven’s official website.
For many years, the Tempur-Pedic was the gold standard for high-price mattress comfort. They were one of the first companies to introduce memory foam to the market, and have been riding that wave for over a decade.
While other manufacturers have continued to experiment with new materials and construction techniques, Tempur-Pedic sticks with what works – classic memory foam with enough support for a great night’s sleep.
These mattresses don’t come without issues though – people frequently complain about the chemical smell that Tempur-Pedic beds can give off when they’re new.
Before you throw down the cash for a Tempur-Pedic, read our in-depth Tempur-Pedic mattress review.
The Best Luxury Mattress ($5,000+)
When it comes to ultra high end mattresses, there’s one name in the game: Duxiana. If you want the best night’s sleep you can get in a bed that’s custom-made to fit your needs, chances are Duxiana has you covered.
They offer memory foam, innerspring, and hybrid mattresses with multi-layer construction, great airflow, and extreme comfort.
Their most expensive models are more than $12,000, so start saving today if you want to tuck into a Duxiana.
