Full Tuft & Needle Mattress Review

The Tuft & Needle mattress combines clever design, air flow system and high quality, high density polyurethane foam (aka “poly foam”) to offer many of the advantages of memory foam and latex but at a fraction of the cost.

Manufactured wholly in the USA with materials sourced locally, offering well-distributed pressure relief at a great price, the mattress has earned a place among the highest rated mattresses.

What Type of Mattress is the Tuft & Needle Mattress?

The Tuft & Needle is a high performance yet affordable poly foam mattress made in the USA.

It uses a proprietary Tuft & Needle Adaptive Foam that offers both support and pressure relief for universal comfort.

Like memory foam, this poly foam is designed to support the spine’s natural position and prevent back and neck pains.

However it eliminates the problem of heat trapping that memory foam has, with its air-flow encouraging design.

It also aims to offer more support than memory foam with its high density poly foam support layer.

The Tuft & Needle mattress also compares favorably with latex foams, namely better breathability and affordability.

This mattress aims to offer great weight distribution, localized bounce and universal firmness at great prices.

How Firm is It?

hand touching fabric on foamIn general, the mattress is designed to offer medium firm, universal comfort.

The very high density poly foam comfort layer is usually soft enough for great comfort while offering a good amount of firmness.

The high density support layer holds up the mattress and gives it added firmness.

Users of the Tuft & Needle mattress have had various subjective experiences with its firmness.

A few side sleepers have found it too firm, while some other sleepers have found it not firm enough.

A few reviewers swear that by adding a mattress pad, it becomes indistinguishable from $3,000 mattresses…

The 100-day trial period (see below) will help customers figure out whether the mattress offers the firmness or comfort they desire.

Does the Tuft & Needle Mattress Offer Good Motion Isolation?

While the motion isolation of poly foams are not as impressive as high end memory foam or high end latex mattresses, users of the Tuft & Needle mattress have found it to be quite suitable in offering restful sleep with a partner.

The mattress is designed with localized bounce, which means that couples can sleep on the same mattress without getting disturbed by each other’s movements through the night.

Will It Get Hot?

the airflow isn't locked by glue in this mattressThe Tuft & Needle mattress is designed to offer cool and comfortable sleep, with a special surface treatment on the bottom for increasing air flow.

While you sleep, the mattress draws heat from the body and eliminates it through the layers.

Pure foam mattresses usually are made of many layers of different foam densities to reach the desired firmness level.

The downside of that approach is that for each layer, a film of glue must be used to keep the part attached.

This means that even though the foam used in each layer can let air through, the glue itself acts as a partial barrier, and the more layers there are, the more this barrier becomes strong, blocking the airflow and causing heat to be trapped.

To solve this problem, Turf & Needle had the simple but awesome idea of getting rid of all but two layers, focusing on the best combination possible.

As a result, the natural airflow between the layers is vastly superior to many competing mattresses.

How Long Will the Mattress Last?

Buy american signPoly foam mattresses made of high density foam generally have longer lifespan than their low density counterparts.

The foams used in the comfort and support layers of the Tuft & Needle 10 inch mattress is very close to latex in its structure, which can potentially give it a long life of 10 years or more.

Of course it is important to ensure that the mattress is used as recommended to get the maximum durability.

The mattress is entirely manufactured in the USA.

Does The It Smell When New?

Poly foam is usually expected to have a chemical smell when it arrives from the factory, because of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are released during and after manufacture.

However we couldn’t find any users of the Tuft & Needle mattress complaining of off-gassing, and surprisingly some have even reported a pleasant fresh smell when the mattress was unpacked.

In any case, if you happen to smell a new mattress odor of any kind, you can leave the mattress into open air (like with open windows) after removing mattress protectors or sheets used with it. You can leave the original zippered cover on.

After a few hours, or at worst a few days, the smell will dissipate. In general, this off-gassing is normal for foam mattresses, within safe standards and not harmful.

How Is The Tuft & Needle Mattress Structured?

The Tuft & Needle mattress has a very simple structure with just a comfort layer placed on a support layer, both made of a blended polyurethane foam tested and certified by CertiPUR-US.

tutf and needle mattress layersThe comfort foam layer (upper part) is a very high density, high resilience poly foam (2.8 lbs) that is the best grade of poly foam available today.

This type of foam is very close in structure and comfort to latex, while offering strong price benefits, since poly foam is less expensive to manufacture. This high density poly foam is also expected to last for many years.

The support foam used for the lower layer is a high density poly foam (1.8 lbs) that reduces the effect of softening of foam.

The entire mattress is covered in a zippered rayon and polyester Tactel cover material that can be fully removed.

How Big Is this Mattress? What other sizes are available?

The Tuft & Needle mattress delivery boxThe 10-inch Queen-size mattress measures 60 by 80 inches and arrives highly compressed in a compact packaging.

The mattress will need a few hours to fill out into its final height. Other sizes available are:

  • Twin (39″ x 75″ x 10″)
  • Twin XL (39″ x 80″ x 10″)
  • Full (54″ x 75″ x 10″)
  • King (76″ x 80″ x 10″)
  • California King (72″ x 84″ x 10″)

You can also purchase 5 inch variants of the mattresses on for use in areas where there is less headroom for a 10 inch mattress.

Does It Need A Foundation Or A Bed Frame?

Tuft & Needle recommends that you place the mattress on a firm foundation like a box spring bed, slatted frames or even the floor.

Any other kind of foundation that is not firm enough can change the comfort levels for sleepers and also affect the health of the mattress over time.

There are some caveats for users who want to place the mattress on the floor.

Tuft & Needle uses a special spacer cloth on the bottom for optimizing air flow.

When placing it on plywood, cotton rugs or moist surfaces, air flow can be restricted over time leading to mildew.

For those living in humid climates and using the mattress on the floor, Tuft & Needle recommends propping the mattress up once or twice a week to get air flow back to normal.

Ideally in humid climates the mattress should be placed on a bed frame or foundation.

Can I Use A Mattress Pad With the Mattress?

Yes, you can use a mattress pad with this mattress.

Tuft & Needle recommends the use of a protector to help keep the mattress clean.

You can also use zippered encasement-style protectors with allergen filters etc. that can give the sleeper an extra layer of protection as well.

According to the manufacturer, you can even use a heating pad without risking any damage or voiding the warranty.

How Do I Care For the Mattress?

Tuft & Needle mattress detailCaring for the mattress, as with other memory foam mattresses, is easy.

The cover should not be machine washed or tumble-dried as it may shrink.

The cover should instead be unzipped and removed, and spot-cleaned with a mild detergent.

The cleaned area should be fully dry before being replaced on the mattress.

There is no need to air, flip or rotate the mattress because of its special design.

The mattress should always be placed with the zippered side on the bottom.

You can sleep directly on the mattress, but Tuft & Needle recommends using sheets (that you replace regularly) as well as a protector if possible.

Is There a Comfort Guarantee?

The return policy when you purchase directly from the Tuft & Needles website is exceptional: the 100 night free return policy, raised from the original 30-night policy gives users enough time to test out their mattress and find out if it is suitable for them.

What Is the Warranty Offered by Tuft & Needle?

Tuft and Needle’s warranty is quite impressive and in keeping with its high standards of customer service.

the turf and needle mattress in a nice roomThe mattress comes with a 10-year Limited Warranty that covers workmanship flaws or material defects as long as you have been using the mattress as recommended.

The warranty covers defects such as a visible sag more than 0.75 inches in the foam when there is no weight on it.

Most other mattress manufacturers only process sagging claims of 1.25 inches or more, so this makes the Tuft & Needle warranty terms impressive.

The warranty also covers any flaw that leads to the foam cracking or splitting, as well as mattress cover defects like fabric tear or unraveled stitching.

Tuft & Needle may replace the mattress, material parts like the cover, or repair parts as it sees fit. The warranty policy applies throughout the 10 year period after purchase, with no pro-rating of the terms.

Note that to avoid voiding warranty you should make sure the mattress is supported by a proper foundation that can carry your weight as well as that of the mattress with proper weight distribution.

How Much Does the Tuft & Needle Mattress Cost?

In comparison with other memory high-quality foam mattresses, the Tuft & Needle 10-inch Queen-size mattress is very affordable, with no compromise on materials, craftsmanship, warranty or return policy.

Currently available at a price of just $595 in Queen, this mattress offers real value to well informed people not ready to spend thousands, but also wary of the many over-hyped low quality products on the market today.

Here is the complete price list:

As in the case of other new generation manufacturers like Saatva and Casper, Tuft & Needle are able to offer such a great price because they eliminate the middleman and ship directly to customers.

Any recommendations of a specific topper that others swore by that makes the mattress feel like $3,000 mattress?

Also, any specific recommendations for a zippered bed bug protector?

Michael in Fairfax

I am interested in purchasing a T&N queen mattress. I have a regular bed, not a platform bed, so I would need the T&N foundation, which I understand is available for $250.00. Fine. I just can’t understand how a foundation that comes in a box will be rigid enough to provide support on a regular bed frame with slats running horizontally across the bed frame. Can someone explain to me? I am otherwise ready to purchase the mattress. Thanks.

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Michael,
the T&N can lay directly on any flat surface, including the floor, or any kind of platform or regular slats. I’m not sure I understand your question…

Will this get softer and if so how long till that happens? After two months I am having issues with it feeling great to fall asleep on and then waking up with throbbing pressure points on my hips and across my neck. I weigh 114 pounds and sleep side and back. My lower back feels great though. When I add the pad to alleviate pressure points, I wake up with my lower back killing me so I need to get rid of the pad. Will this mattress soften enough over time to not create pressure points with someone my weight?

Can I use my 10 year low profile as a base for T&N?

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi John,

most probably yes, as this mattress can be used on virtually any flat surface.

I’m confused with your statements that the Tuft and Needle mattress has to be on a hard surface. The advertise it as working with an adjustable frame. That seems contradictory to what you are saying.

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Nancy,

It’s not a hard surface but a firm one, in order not to distort the comfort the mattress is design to provide.

I like the mattress, but it definitely off-gasses. The worst smell of any of the eight mattresses I bought this year. Yes, eight. Foam, innerspring, hybrid, Purple.

Others on Amazon commented on the smell, too. If I didn’t like everything else about the mattress, I would have returned it, because the smell has not dissipated for two weeks now. And it has aggravated my asthma,

If I purchased this used, What is the best way to clean the mattress cover?

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

The best way is usually to use a steam cleaner. There are plenty of guides around with instructions.

Regarding mildew question in Oct 2017, you mentioned that the mattress needs circulating air, particularly in areas where humidity is high. Would a zippered mattress protector have a similar affect – limiting airflow thus causing mildew? Does the use of a zippered mattress protector void the warranty? We are considering these for our vacation rental in SC but our mattresses must be zipper covered with a solid protector.

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Donna,

a mattress protector won’t void the warranty. To avoid mildew, ensure the protector is a breathable one and wash it frequently. This is not a a Tuft & Needle issue… it’s valid for all mattresses in very humid climates.

Can you tell me the amount of VOC level the mattress omits (Example: 36ug/m3)?

In the section of the article ‘Does It Need A Foundation Or A Bed Frame?’ the author writes, “When placing it on plywood, cotton rugs or moist surfaces, air flow can be restricted over time leading to mildew.”

1. Regarding plywood, is it the material that may cause mildew to the mattress, or is it the fact that resting a mattress on plywood does not allow the mattress to breathe?

2. I feel a solid platform vs a slated platform would provide more support. But after reading the quote above, I am concerned that a solid platform has its cons because it restricts air flow. What benefit is more significant, the air flow or the increased structure? Which is a better foundation, slated or platform?

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi John,

it’s not that the plywood by itself causes mildew. The fact that it blocks the mattress’ surface doesn’t allow the air to circulate, so if there is high humidity in the air (like in Florida) it might get trapped inside and will stay there, resulting in mildew. If you live in a mostly dry place this won’t happen.

In general, we prefer slats as they provide good support and in many cases can even be adjusted to get that bit more or less firmness which sometimes is missing.

I see that it says “may” cause shrinkage if washed. If one were to was it by machine, how would one go about the setting to insure that it doesn’t shrink?

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Justin,

best is to clean the spots individually. If you really need to wash it, the safest is always to either bring it to the dry cleaners or to hand wash it in lukewarm water with a mild soap.

What kind of foundation is recommended on a regular king size bed?

Can you put this mattress on a box spring?

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Ken,

a very simple platform like this will be just fine. But with this mattress you can use pretty much anything as long as it’s flat and rigid enough.

Can this mattress be used on a foundation that can be elevated top and bottom

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Joanne,

yes, it can be used on adjustable bed frames as the foam is very flexible.

Do you offer an RV King 72″ x 80″

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Ken,

that size isn’t available according to our information. The closest seems to be the regular King at 76″ x 80′. But you might want to check directly with Tuft & Needle to make sure.

This is by far the best mattress we have ever owned! I cannot say enough good things about it, or the company itself. When I told them that our dogs also lived it, they sent us a package of items for the dogs!

No more sleepless nights, or body aches. Simply perfect.
