Full Tuft & Needle Original Mattress Review

Tuft & Needle made a huge name in the bedding industry as it offered one of the lowest priced all-foam beds in a box directly to users.

Tuft & Needle Original is one of the biggest bed-in-a-box companies on the marketplace.

Founded in the year 2012, this all-foam bed is soft and simple without any fuss.

Being an early player in the bed-in-a-box space, the company decided to build up on their initial concept and widen it with their unique Tuft & Needle Mint mattress.

However, the original bed is comfortable, offers good quality, and a restful night of sleep.

What Type of Mattress is the Tuft & Needle Original?

The T&N Original is a comfortable, all-foam bed which is more desirable for back and stomach sleepers.

It is a great bed for combination sleepers as well.

If you are light-weighted, this medium firm bed can support you well on your stomach and back, while relieving pressure and without trapping you in the bed.

The new Tuft & Needle Mint bed on the other hand, is a higher end bed which is priced affordably.

However, it is thicker and softer than the original bed, but is made up of foam totally.

The only difference is that the company added a middle layer in its new Mint mattress so that you do not feel the support foams.

This in turn has made the bed softer, making it more attractive to users who sleep on their side.

And that makes great sense as over 60% of the sleepers are side-dominant users.

How Firm is it?

The Tuft & Needle Original is a medium firm mattress, and has a neutral and soft foam, which is quite comfortable and accommodating.

In other words, the bed is so neutral that anyone can get easily comfortable on and it feels nothing like a memory foam bed.

In addition to this, the bed is quite responsive and thus, reacts instantly to pressure.

It is certainly not like a memory foam bed that leaves behind your body impression, which implies that it returns to form instantly.

Thus, it is a great option for sleepers who wish to be able to easily rotate positions.

In addition to this, the bed is good in terms of responsiveness, which implies that it won’t take more effort to switch from your stomach to your side to your back and so on.

How Many Layers Does it Have?

It is a 10″ bed which is made up of just two layers.

However, this does not imply it isn’t a good bed.

In fact, over 95% of users really like the bed and keep it.

  • Top Layer: This is a 3″ layer which is made up of a proprietary Adaptive Foam, which integrates graphite as well as gel in order to regulate temperature and keep the surface of the bed cool. This layer feels like a soft poly foam layer. Furthermore, there is no typical feel, but it is comfortable, fluffy, and neutral.
  • Base Layer:  This is a 7″ foundation layer which is made up of polyurethane foam. It is dense and provides foundation as well as support for the bed.

Does the Tuft & Needle Mattress Sleep Hot?

No, the bed does not sleep hot as it is temperature neutral.

Although it is not made up of phase change cooling materials but it won’t sleep hot as your conventional bed.

The top layer of the bed is suffused with graphite gel which in turn helps to dissipate heat, thus allowing you to sleep cool.

In addition to this, the cover of the bed is breathable, thus offering a cooler sleep surface.

How is Motion Transfer and Sinkage?

Besides the temperature, support, comfort, and feel of the mattress, there are two other imperative components that users should be mindful of.

The first is motion isolation which is actually good with the Tuft & Needle Original bed.

So if you or your partner is active during the night, this is a good option as it deadens transfer of motion efficiently.

Although it is not the best bed for motion isolation, but it should be just fine.

The second imperative component to consider is edge support and this bed fares quite well in this category.

Does it Have any Smell When Unpacked?

The bed is made in the US, which ensures that it uses highest-rated materials that are available on the marketplace.

Some off-gassing may be expected with this bed, however, the smell dissipates within a few hours.

Does it Require a Foundation?

No, it does not require a specific foundation.

However, the company suggests you to place it on a firm surface, such as a slatted frame, box spring bed, or even the floor.

What type of Cover does it Have?

The company modified the cover of Tuft & Needle Original mattress in August 2018.

The T&N cover

Earlier the cover was transparent and the foams beneath were visible.

However, the company has now amended it for a slightly textured and unique cover.

Also, the cover is thin, breathable, and soft.

Now, it is made up of micro polyamide as well as polyester.

In addition to this, it is removable and there is a zip on the underside of the mattress.

What is the Best Way to Care for the Tuft & Needle Original Mattress?

Although the cover has a zipper and it is removable, but it is suggested not to get in the habit of taking it off frequently for cleaning.

If you wish to keep your Tuft & Needle mattress clean and also wish to safeguard it against oil from your skin or any stains, you have the following two options.

Firstly, you can purchase a mattress protector for your bed that will keep it clean from any dirt, dust, or stains.

This a more permanent solution as well as a great way to keep your mattress clean.

However, mattress protectors are usually waterproof, which implies that they are tougher and thicker than a softer foam bed.

Thus, when the protector is on your bed, your mattress may feel a bit firmer.

The second option is to spot clean the bed in case of any stains.

Also, if this is a bed for your children, you may want to use the protector, but if it is for your personal use, you may consider spot cleaning method as necessary.

How Durable is the Tuft & Needle Original?

The bed is made in the US, which ensures that superior quality materials are used in its construction, thus making the bed more durable.

The bed is designed to perform for at least 6 – 7 years, which is on par with most other similar models.

Size and Shipping

The bed is shipped free of cost to all the 50 states in the US.

The mattress is compressed and shipped in a box.

Once it arrives, you can place it in the room where you wish to set it up, and allow it sit for a few hours so that it expands completely.

100-Night Risk Free Sleep Trial

The company offers a 100 night sleep trial, which implies that if you are not completely satisfied with your new bed after trying it for the first 100 nights, you can return the bed for a full refund.

In order to initiate the return process, you can get in touch with their support team and the company will work with you to fix up a local pickup, in order to collect the bed before issuing the refund.

Tuft & Needle Warranty

The bed comes with a 10 year limited warranty, thus ensuring that the company stands behind its bed.

The corner of the Tuft & Needle original mattressThis warranty is applicable only during the period in which the Tuft & Needle bed is owned as well as controlled by it’s original buyer.

In addition to this, it is limited to any material flaws resulting from faulty workmanship or materials in the bed you have purchased.

The company will either replace or repair the faulty mattress, or the faulty component(s) of the mattress.

In the case of any manufacturing flaws in a component of the bed, such as the cover of the mattress, the company may elect to replace or repair the component if feasible instead of replacing the entire bed.

The Tuft & Needle Original Mattress Review – Our Verdict

The Tuft & Needle is a comfortable 10″ all-foam bed at a value price.

It is a good option for side as well as combo users, specially if you are on a budget.

You may find it to be slightly firm initially, but it will soften gradually and end up being more comfortable for side sleepers.

As it is quite responsive, this also makes for a good bed for combo users.

Although the bed is not the firmest one on the marketplace, but it is suitable for dainty/medium stomach and back users.

It also does a great job of supporting the hips and keeping the spine in correct alignment.

In addition to this, if you sleep slightly warm, neutral, or cold, you should be just good with this bed.

Furthermore, if you require the comfort of foam, but do not want to sleep hot during the night, this is a great option for you.

Last but not the least, the Tuft & Needle Original mattress comes with a 100 night sleep trial, free shipping, a 10 year warranty, and it is all about value for your money.

In fact, with a price tag of just $445 for Queen size, it’s a good bargain.

Any recommendations of a specific topper that others swore by that makes the mattress feel like $3,000 mattress?

Also, any specific recommendations for a zippered bed bug protector?

2
Michael in Fairfax

I am interested in purchasing a T&N queen mattress. I have a regular bed, not a platform bed, so I would need the T&N foundation, which I understand is available for $250.00. Fine. I just can’t understand how a foundation that comes in a box will be rigid enough to provide support on a regular bed frame with slats running horizontally across the bed frame. Can someone explain to me? I am otherwise ready to purchase the mattress. Thanks.

Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Michael,
the T&N can lay directly on any flat surface, including the floor, or any kind of platform or regular slats. I’m not sure I understand your question…

4

Will this get softer and if so how long till that happens? After two months I am having issues with it feeling great to fall asleep on and then waking up with throbbing pressure points on my hips and across my neck. I weigh 114 pounds and sleep side and back. My lower back feels great though. When I add the pad to alleviate pressure points, I wake up with my lower back killing me so I need to get rid of the pad. Will this mattress soften enough over time to not create pressure points with someone my weight?

5

Can I use my 10 year low profile as a base for T&N?

6
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi John,

most probably yes, as this mattress can be used on virtually any flat surface.

7

I’m confused with your statements that the Tuft and Needle mattress has to be on a hard surface. The advertise it as working with an adjustable frame. That seems contradictory to what you are saying.

8
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Nancy,

It’s not a hard surface but a firm one, in order not to distort the comfort the mattress is design to provide.

9

I like the mattress, but it definitely off-gasses. The worst smell of any of the eight mattresses I bought this year. Yes, eight. Foam, innerspring, hybrid, Purple.

Others on Amazon commented on the smell, too. If I didn’t like everything else about the mattress, I would have returned it, because the smell has not dissipated for two weeks now. And it has aggravated my asthma,

10

If I purchased this used, What is the best way to clean the mattress cover?

11
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

The best way is usually to use a steam cleaner. There are plenty of guides around with instructions.

12

Regarding mildew question in Oct 2017, you mentioned that the mattress needs circulating air, particularly in areas where humidity is high. Would a zippered mattress protector have a similar affect – limiting airflow thus causing mildew? Does the use of a zippered mattress protector void the warranty? We are considering these for our vacation rental in SC but our mattresses must be zipper covered with a solid protector.

13
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Donna,

a mattress protector won’t void the warranty. To avoid mildew, ensure the protector is a breathable one and wash it frequently. This is not a a Tuft & Needle issue… it’s valid for all mattresses in very humid climates.

14

Can you tell me the amount of VOC level the mattress omits (Example: 36ug/m3)?

15

In the section of the article ‘Does It Need A Foundation Or A Bed Frame?’ the author writes, “When placing it on plywood, cotton rugs or moist surfaces, air flow can be restricted over time leading to mildew.”

1. Regarding plywood, is it the material that may cause mildew to the mattress, or is it the fact that resting a mattress on plywood does not allow the mattress to breathe?

2. I feel a solid platform vs a slated platform would provide more support. But after reading the quote above, I am concerned that a solid platform has its cons because it restricts air flow. What benefit is more significant, the air flow or the increased structure? Which is a better foundation, slated or platform?

Thanks!

16
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi John,

it’s not that the plywood by itself causes mildew. The fact that it blocks the mattress’ surface doesn’t allow the air to circulate, so if there is high humidity in the air (like in Florida) it might get trapped inside and will stay there, resulting in mildew. If you live in a mostly dry place this won’t happen.

In general, we prefer slats as they provide good support and in many cases can even be adjusted to get that bit more or less firmness which sometimes is missing.

17

I see that it says “may” cause shrinkage if washed. If one were to was it by machine, how would one go about the setting to insure that it doesn’t shrink?

18
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Justin,

best is to clean the spots individually. If you really need to wash it, the safest is always to either bring it to the dry cleaners or to hand wash it in lukewarm water with a mild soap.

19

What kind of foundation is recommended on a regular king size bed?

20

Can you put this mattress on a box spring?

21
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Ken,

a very simple platform like this will be just fine. But with this mattress you can use pretty much anything as long as it’s flat and rigid enough.

22

Can this mattress be used on a foundation that can be elevated top and bottom

23
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Joanne,

yes, it can be used on adjustable bed frames as the foam is very flexible.

24

Do you offer an RV King 72″ x 80″

25
Stacey Morgan – STAFF

Hi Ken,

that size isn’t available according to our information. The closest seems to be the regular King at 76″ x 80′. But you might want to check directly with Tuft & Needle to make sure.

26

This is by far the best mattress we have ever owned! I cannot say enough good things about it, or the company itself. When I told them that our dogs also lived it, they sent us a package of items for the dogs!

No more sleepless nights, or body aches. Simply perfect.
