Manufactured wholly in the USA with materials sourced locally, offering well-distributed pressure relief at a great price, the mattress has earned a place among the highest rated mattresses.
What Type of Mattress is the Tuft & Needle Mattress?
The Tuft & Needle is a high performance yet affordable poly foam mattress made in the USA.
It uses a proprietary Tuft & Needle Adaptive Foam that offers both support and pressure relief for universal comfort.
Like memory foam, this poly foam is designed to support the spine’s natural position and prevent back and neck pains.
However it eliminates the problem of heat trapping that memory foam has, with its air-flow encouraging design.
It also aims to offer more support than memory foam with its high density poly foam support layer.
The Tuft & Needle mattress also compares favorably with latex foams, namely better breathability and affordability.
This mattress aims to offer great weight distribution, localized bounce and universal firmness at great prices.
How Firm is It?
The very high density poly foam comfort layer is usually soft enough for great comfort while offering a good amount of firmness.
The high density support layer holds up the mattress and gives it added firmness.
Users of the Tuft & Needle mattress have had various subjective experiences with its firmness.
A few side sleepers have found it too firm, while some other sleepers have found it not firm enough.
A few reviewers swear that by adding a mattress pad, it becomes indistinguishable from $3,000 mattresses…
The 100-day trial period (see below) will help customers figure out whether the mattress offers the firmness or comfort they desire.
Does the Tuft & Needle Mattress Offer Good Motion Isolation?
While the motion isolation of poly foams are not as impressive as high end memory foam or high end latex mattresses, users of the Tuft & Needle mattress have found it to be quite suitable in offering restful sleep with a partner.
The mattress is designed with localized bounce, which means that couples can sleep on the same mattress without getting disturbed by each other’s movements through the night.
Will It Get Hot?
While you sleep, the mattress draws heat from the body and eliminates it through the layers.
Pure foam mattresses usually are made of many layers of different foam densities to reach the desired firmness level.
The downside of that approach is that for each layer, a film of glue must be used to keep the part attached.
This means that even though the foam used in each layer can let air through, the glue itself acts as a partial barrier, and the more layers there are, the more this barrier becomes strong, blocking the airflow and causing heat to be trapped.
To solve this problem, Turf & Needle had the simple but awesome idea of getting rid of all but two layers, focusing on the best combination possible.
As a result, the natural airflow between the layers is vastly superior to many competing mattresses.
How Long Will the Mattress Last?
The foams used in the comfort and support layers of the Tuft & Needle 10 inch mattress is very close to latex in its structure, which can potentially give it a long life of 10 years or more.
Of course it is important to ensure that the mattress is used as recommended to get the maximum durability.
The mattress is entirely manufactured in the USA.
Does The It Smell When New?
Poly foam is usually expected to have a chemical smell when it arrives from the factory, because of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are released during and after manufacture.
However we couldn’t find any users of the Tuft & Needle mattress complaining of off-gassing, and surprisingly some have even reported a pleasant fresh smell when the mattress was unpacked.
In any case, if you happen to smell a new mattress odor of any kind, you can leave the mattress into open air (like with open windows) after removing mattress protectors or sheets used with it. You can leave the original zippered cover on.
After a few hours, or at worst a few days, the smell will dissipate. In general, this off-gassing is normal for foam mattresses, within safe standards and not harmful.
How Is The Tuft & Needle Mattress Structured?
The Tuft & Needle mattress has a very simple structure with just a comfort layer placed on a support layer, both made of a blended polyurethane foam tested and certified by CertuPUR-US.
This type of foam is very close in structure and comfort to latex, while offering strong price benefits, since poly foam is less expensive to manufacture. This high density poly foam is also expected to last for many years.
The support foam used for the lower layer is a high density poly foam (1.8 lbs) that reduces the effect of softening of foam.
The entire mattress is covered in a zippered rayon and polyester Tactel cover material that can be fully removed.
How Big Is this Mattress? What other sizes are available?
The mattress will need a few hours to fill out into its final height. Other sizes available are:
- Twin (39″ x 75″ x 10″)
- Twin XL (39″ x 80″ x 10″)
- Full (54″ x 75″ x 10″)
- King (76″ x 80″ x 10″)
- California King (72″ x 84″ x 10″)
You can also purchase 5 inch variants of the mattresses on Amazon.com for use in areas where there is less headroom for a 10 inch mattress.
Does It Need A Foundation Or A Bed Frame?
Tuft & Needle recommends that you place the mattress on a firm foundation like a box spring bed, slatted frames or even the floor.
Any other kind of foundation that is not firm enough can change the comfort levels for sleepers and also affect the health of the mattress over time.
There are some caveats for users who want to place the mattress on the floor.
Tuft & Needle uses a special spacer cloth on the bottom for optimizing air flow.
When placing it on plywood, cotton rugs or moist surfaces, air flow can be restricted over time leading to mildew.
For those living in humid climates and using the mattress on the floor, Tuft & Needle recommends propping the mattress up once or twice a week to get air flow back to normal.
Ideally in humid climates the mattress should be placed on a bed frame or foundation.
Can I Use A Mattress Pad With the Mattress?
Yes, you can use a mattress pad with this mattress.
Tuft & Needle recommends the use of a protector to help keep the mattress clean.
You can also use zippered encasement-style protectors with allergen filters etc. that can give the sleeper an extra layer of protection as well.
According to the manufacturer, you can even use a heating pad without risking any damage or voiding the warranty.
How Do I Care For the Mattress?
The cover should not be machine washed or tumble-dried as it may shrink.
The cover should instead be unzipped and removed, and spot-cleaned with a mild detergent.
The cleaned area should be fully dry before being replaced on the mattress.
There is no need to air, flip or rotate the mattress because of its special design.
The mattress should always be placed with the zippered side on the bottom.
You can sleep directly on the mattress, but Tuft & Needle recommends using sheets (that you replace regularly) as well as a protector if possible.
Is There a Comfort Guarantee?
The return policy when you purchase directly from the Tuft & Needles website is exceptional: the 100 night free return policy, raised from the original 30-night policy gives users enough time to test out their mattress and find out if it is suitable for them.
What Is the Warranty Offered by Tuft & Needle?
Tuft and Needle’s warranty is quite impressive and in keeping with its high standards of customer service.
The warranty covers defects such as a visible sag more than 0.75 inches in the foam when there is no weight on it.
Most other mattress manufacturers only process sagging claims of 1.25 inches or more, so this makes the Tuft & Needle warranty terms impressive.
The warranty also covers any flaw that leads to the foam cracking or splitting, as well as mattress cover defects like fabric tear or unraveled stitching.
Tuft & Needle may replace the mattress, material parts like the cover, or repair parts as it sees fit. The warranty policy applies throughout the 10 year period after purchase, with no pro-rating of the terms.
Note that to avoid voiding warranty you should make sure the mattress is supported by a proper foundation that can carry your weight as well as that of the mattress with proper weight distribution.
How Much Does the Tuft & Needle Mattress Cost?
In comparison with other memory high-quality foam mattresses, the Tuft & Needle 10-inch Queen-size mattress is very affordable, with no compromise on materials, craftsmanship, warranty or return policy.
Currently available at a price of just $595, this mattress offers real value to well informed people not ready to spend thousands, but also wary of the many over-hyped low quality products on the market today.
